'New' footage from 2003 interview with Stan Anderson.

Last night I posted the video below on the thread started last week by atypical_boro asking why did Stan Anderson leave the Boro. I thought it was worth a thread of it's own for the weekday crew on here who may not have revisited atypical_boro's thread.

The thread prompted me to dig out the video of the interview I carried out with Stan at Tall Trees in 2003. It was on the night of a benefit organised by Hilary Maddren to raise funds for MND research. I knew that I would have asked Stan about his leaving the Boro and his answer is in this new video.

It has been quite a revelation to view the full 1.5hr video again for the first time in 17 years. Stan was in good spirits possibly helped by Boro and TLF beating Spurs 5-1 that afternoon. There is a lot of interesting footage that I did not include in the transcribed version I submitted to MSS magazine.

In the next week, I'll probably put another clip together.

Cant wait for the next excerpt Shaun. Whats getting me now is what did Johnny Vincent lie about? I remember JV signing he was fair but no great shakes, he went the other way in the Foggon deal , Freddie Goodwin Brum sold us JV, Jimmy Scoular Cardiff Sold us AF and took JV. We replaced JV with Souness as left wing.

Brilliant, Stans very open , love to see the uncut long version

My first thought was to just upload the whole 1.5hr video to YouTube unedited - it would certainly be a lot quicker as editing Stan's words into a meaningful narrative can be quite time consuming, as, with hugest respect possible, he tended to slip off subject into tangents and up alleyways.

For example, in the new video you will see that he starts talking about Charlie Amer and then there is a savage edit. This is because before telling the story that is shown in the video, Stan told a not very interesting or relevant story about how Charlie Amer once gave him a crate of champagne to help his (Stan's) wife's arthritis. This took up just over a minute of time. Not very long you might think, but when you can only have 10 minutes maximum video length, that's 10 per cent gone on a meaningless, irrelevant anecdote.

Also, there is a lot of chit chat between us about what were then current football affairs - David Beckham moving to Real Madrid, the pace of Jay-Jay Okocha and the form of Bobby Robson's Newcastle for example - which is not particularly interesting or relevant 17 years on. It's like listening to two blokes chatting in a pub.

Of course, the other consideration is that to upload the uncut video, bearing in mind that YouTube only allow me videos of 10 minutes length, would necessitate uploading 10 different videos, which very few people would bother with watching. I reckon I can get the most interesting and relevant content into two or three videos that will garner more interest, the second of which I am working on today.

As a taster, the second and third videos look like they will tell of the tortuous process of persuading the board to pay £35k for a Spurs reserve player called Graeme Souness, Stan being the first England player to be sent off, his battles with Don Masson, how John Hickton evolved from a full back into a striker, why Stan let John O'Rourke go, why Stan retired from playing....and a couple of Willie Whigham stories, of course. Hmm...might have to be three videos.

I am really grateful to atypical_boro for his original thread as it has kicked my backside into reviewing these tapes that have sat undisturbed on my shelf for many years to find new, mostly unpublished content.

I have decided to also review the videos of interviews with Steven Gibson (2003), John O'Rourke (2015) and David Chadwick (2003) in due course to find more buried treasure.

Really looking forward to watching the rest of these Picto_Leng, it is really good of you to go to this trouble, many thanks. Well done to Atypical too, for planting the seeds (y)
