Captain Cook Square

Work has started on a new town centre cinema which will be the latest addition to Middlesbrough’s growing leisure sector.

Captain Cook Square has already been transformed into a regional destination featuring family entertainment and great food.

Now, work is underway to fit out a three-screen cinema in units previously occupied by discount retailers, to further bolster the square’s offer.

Middlesbrough Council has appointed Walter Thompson Contractors Ltd from Northallerton as main contractors, with sub-contractors including Tom Willoughby Ltd from Northallerton as well as Twin Services Ltd and SP Electrical Contractors Ltd, both from Stockton.

"This cinema won’t just offer blockbusters and popcorn but will be something different to what's already available elsewhere in the area.

Middlesbrough Council bought Captain Cook Square in 2020 and has used government money to transform shops into leisure and hospitality outlets.

The redevelopment of Captain Cook Square is part of a strategy to attract visitors to the town centre for a wider variety of reasons including leisure, work, education and health, which in turn will help to support existing retail businesses.

The cinema project is part of the wider Future High Street Fund programme, and funded by the Tees Valley Mayor and the Tees Valley Combined Authority.

Sat next door in Wendy’s , Ive generally felt a cinema would help get the footfall up in towns but obviously rent/rates make the difference.

You don't go to the cinema, do you?

Very rare I've been the last few year and its less than half full and we go couple times a month.
Ihave a cineworld card and go a couple of times a week. I have to go during the day as getting back home on the bus is impossible after 9.30 (only 1 an hour from 7pm onwards). During a midweek day crowds are sparse (for obvious reasons) but on a weekend or during school holidays they do seem very healthy.

If the buses were sorted out to be able to get to Thornaby centre after 9.30 then I would go even more often as there are often special showings that are only shown in the evenings.

So come come Mr Houchen, lets get the buses on an evening improved

We normally use the Vue in Hartlepool and it's rarely busy, usually a dozen or so in when we watch, which is early evening.

Could be the films we watch, all the same.

All comes down to supply and demand. If there is no demand on an evening to use the buses then it makes no business sense to put more on just to meet the requirements of a small minority, your just going to lose money.

Not sure this is right, I mean we can spend £150m on an airport that no one uses, so why not a couple of them millions on buses?
Teesside Airport made a profit for the first time in a decade this year due to rising passenger numbers and business developments so they have invested money into it.

No it didnt and that wasn't the claim made by the airport team either
