Neil Warnock - 'There's nobody at the club I wouldn't sell'

Interesting that none of our players that left at the end of the season have been picked up by other teams yet. Lots of free agents around and I wouldn’t be surprised if wages are much lower than usual.

I dont get the Tav love in quite yet. He has looked ok but he is getting some praise not exactly Ramirez first time round is he. Lets face it apart from a few bright spots he hasnt been able to command a starting place in just about the worst boro team in over 30 years.

Jury still out for me. Big season for him

Some of the promising young players are only going to increase in value, so to me its silly selling say a player like Tav for £6m when he could be worth £20m in the future, say if good enough for the Premiership, its like selling unripened fruit at 30% of the price. The same for Spence and Coulson. From the players point of view its not going to help them playing in a Premiership's under 23 side. By the time a player is typically 23 and they have played 50 plus senior games their potential is better known.

Birmingham have sold a very good young player Bellingham for £20m - he is only 17, but it shows how teenagers can have a high transfer price. I expect their will be add ons with that deal as well.

Today's Northern Echo

I'm so pleased to hear this

Not one of them has proved themselves to be vital to us, so whatever is needed to get a better squad has to be done

As Ive said before I'm not especially wanting any particular player gone, just wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over anyone leaving if that's what it takes

I agree totally.
Not one player, not even Howson can say their season was a good one.
I think Warnock is absolutely correct in letting them all know their easy days are over, any slackness will be addressed with verbals and probably a transfer.
Certain players will be going anyway.
They have had their chances here.
Let somebody else pay them for failure.

The board is all about opinions but I thought a few of the young players had very good seasons particularly Coulson, Spence and Tav.

Howson to me had his best season at the club.

Our best ever crop of young player was in 1986 (Cooper, Ripley, Pally were all future England internationals and debuted) but as a team it was awful. I do remember at the time thinking Ripley and Pally were very good for their age, but no one rated them. Beagrie was spotted and acted upon by Sheffield United and he went onto to play at the top level. They bought him for 35k and sold him for £220k. We went into admin for the sake of £1m. I will stick my neck out and say the three I have listed will play in the Premiership sometime in their career.

I would be interested to get the opinions of 1986 fans - did you think our youngsters then would make the top league?

Bernie Slaven's 23 goals always gave you hope!

"He hasn't proved it yet" - "just had a few good games" these sort of analytical comments are common when trying to assess young players and perfectly natural, but at a certain point you think this player has a good chance of making it or alternatively little chance.

Spence only debuted this season and you can see opposition sides doubling and even tripling up on him.

The 1986 kids were first choice every week out of necessity but you could see the quality of Pally and Ripley from early on.

Bear 66

RW on Slaven about end of January 1986 after 4 months playing for Boro.

He is slow, not strong the ball, can't head, a bit greedy, a bit wild - waste of money - Gary Rowett and Archie Stephens are better, even David Currie. I was wrong with time and should have seen more potential in Slaven. He could finish and was clinical if he could get in the right position.

Slaven adapted he stayed a little higher up the pitch, so his lack of pace was less of a problem, he learnt to head when he was needed in the six yard box, he learnt to anticipate better so he could out wit defenders opposed to out muscle them, he worked on his shooting, Dropping down a division helped his confidence and paired him with Stephens who did his aerial battles for him. I think he worked a bit on improving his speed over short distances

CC thanks for your post

What interests me if everyone could see they were top level players of the future why didn't anyone come in with say £35k each for them? MFC was on it knees and could not pay wages. The only bid I heard was from Charlton for Hammie.

Pallister was obviously the best, Ripley and Beagrie were clearly going to be very good players. Slaven was already a very good player, but no kid.
Cooper turned out better than I expected by some way. Mowbray was not as good as I thought he'd be in 87.
Gary Hamilton was just very unlucky with injury- no world beater maybe, but I wish we had him now.
Kernaghan had a much better career than I expected.
I thought Lee Turnbull was going to kick on more than he did.
Gary Gill the footballer was like Gary Gill the scout.

It is just so hard to predict.

With Johnston, Proctor and Hodgson, they were so obviously jewels from the start and baptism in the top flight too. I remember going to Old Trafford for the first match in August 1980 - Proc injured - but being so disappointed we lost 3-0. Bailey, Hedley and Shearer all started that day too. Decent crop them 6, but again very different outcomes.
