Neil Warnock on Sam Morsy

I was quite excited when we signed Morsy based on him being a folk hero in Wigan. What we got was a player with zero pace, who couldn’t pick a pass and was a yellow card waiting to happen

Maybe if we had seen him in the flesh things could’ve been different.

Not a memorable time here, I’d almost forgotten him until seeing this thread.

Its easy to knock players after they have left. Midfielders are bought for defensive qualities as well as attacking. He was effectively swapped for Lewis Wing in the summer of 2020?

Morsy is current club captain for an Ipswich side that are 2/5 for promotion and have lost only 4 league games all season.

When he came to Boro we had just survived relegation on the last game of the season. With Morsy we finished 10th the following season and for a lot of the season we were pushing for a play off place. He helped the improvement in results that season. Funds were limited because we were carrying some very expensive players salary wise from previous managers.

He may not be good enough for a Championship promotion side, but he was picked up for peanuts and we are told by the Club that he was sold for a small profit which was good for a player past the mid point of their career. How many Boro purchases have achieved that?

There was some posters in here that really rated him. Kept bringing him up if we had a poor result or Ipswich won.

I haven’t heard him mentioned for a while. Is he still at Ipswich? Might be a decent league one player.
I am one of them. Alongside Massimo Luongo in central midfield he is doing a solid job in navigating Ipswich towards promotion.

No use at this level apart from the very bottom sides. Terrible player. Clearly a reason why he remained in league one for the last few years

Ipswich fans used to have a light hearted comp on their messageboard “Guess the minute Morsy gets a yellow card”. Nice to see his card count hasn’t diminished at Ipswich. He’s had his suspension already this season. A stopper and a bit of a cult player at Wigan where no doubt he shone out and seems to be doing the same down at Portman Rd.

Bet Wigan would have loved to have him back this season. Never really a good enough foitballer for a top end of championship team though.

Morsey was decent for where we were at the time. He did not stand out as a bad player in the squad we had and I remember most being surprised we let him go. Seemed happy to be on the bench ready to play. He fitted Colin’s system so I can understand why he might have wanted to keep him.

I didn’t know hey Colin thinks he needs to keep dropping passive aggressive nonsense towards boro, clearly he’s very bitter watching the succces Carrick is having while spending nothing much.

Thought he was absolutely shocking and one of the reasons we were so poor. Played 1 decent pass in his whole time here and too slow and made to many stupid fouls.

It would have helped if Warnock had actually played him as a defensive midfielder. Morsy was nowhere near as bad as painted here. 1 goal and 5 assists from 35 games in central midfield is a decent return but he always looked to be playing too far up the pitch and panicking because of it.
I was surprised he was bombed out of the club because his performances, while indifferent, were on a par with most of our midfielders under Warnock so it appears that non-football reasons were at least part of the reason.

I met Morsy at a golf day and he gave me one of his shirts. He was a really nice lad and seemed to have his head screwed on. Tbf to him, we didn't really see him as it was when the stadiums were closed to fans, but I also agree that we didn't miss him when he went. And he is captain and seems to be doing well in a team that plays a similar way to us, albeit in the division below.

The main thing for me was that he was committed, which he was, absolutely.

He may have lacked a bit of technique, but then Warnocks teams get the ball front front to back as quickly as possible, sometimes bypassing midfield.

Could he have played in Carricks team? Probably not and ultimately I think it was the right thing to do so move him on, but he was a decent signing and the type of player we needed at the time.

Glad he doing well under an up and coming young manager.
