Neil Warnock has hailed George Friend's "immense contribution" on and off the pitch at Middlesbrough, with contract talks planned in the next week.

"George has been fantastic for this club both on and off the field, and Marvin has done ever so well during the time I’ve been here.

"We’ve been talking all the time about players, and now the season is over, I’m sure discussions will take place regarding both players."

"I would take him on an open top car around the town with me, and George can have a wave as well," he laughed.

"He's an incredible professional. He's been such a help to me since day one. Not just for me but the club, his contribution has been immense.

Sounds like hes in the frame to be offered a new contract.

I can get on board with those two staying, for sure. But likewise I wouldn't lose sleep if an agreement can't be reached.

Think last night commentator said GF had played 299 games for us

Not against it, as we cant change them all at such short notice and need squad players, but I never heard NW say it.
I like George good grafter did all the hard work but had the accuracy of a mortar when crossing a ball. He used to get absolutely murdered by posters during his time but for 100k he paid us 20 times or more back.
Johnson showed he can cross a ball when he wants too, very lax in some instances but this manager seemed to bring him on a bit.

I will be very disappointed if they both get new deals

Both have been fantastic for carrying on playing after the restart

But it’s time to move forward

The squad player argument to give them contracts I also don’t agree with

We need a new LB and Coulson and Bola can be the squad players on much reduced wages In comparison to Friend and Johnson

Why give these two a new deals and then have to get rid of Bola who has a longer contract and sign somebody new

Go get Robinson from Wigan for £2M and then look at getting two new CB’s in

that article is just another extract from NWs post match interview. The Gazette split it into bits allowing them to have a new article each day - total clickbait

Friend hasn't played left back for us once under Warnock, is the club captain and is a good influence in the dressing room, he'll be a handy back-up.

Johnson is a player that I think has done okay in testing circumstances, but wouldn't mind too much if he left or stayed.

Antonee Robinson is a great shout! Depends whether we could afford him. Sadly I think someone bigger and better might be willing to take a punt on him

We've probably got 5 or 6 weeks till the new season starts. We've needed a decent left sided midfielder since we sold Adam reach and the club still haven't managed to sign one. Signing on Johnson and friend is two less players for the recruitment team to find, and both are versatile and offer cover in areas we are shortest - left back and centre back.

I can see many clubs in the Championship having more young inexperienced players in their squads to keep costs down. We are going to have a lot of new players added to our squad in a short space of time and I think GF is a good role model and would help people settle in the area. As long as there's an expectation that he will play 20 games next season I'd like to see him stay as Club Captain provided it doesn't cost too much and hamper our other recruitment.
I also think we need to be identifying a new captain and organiser, ideally a central defender.

He mentioned that we have no leaders & are short of defenders, so expect that area to be priority

I could live with George signing on for another year or two but his wage would have to reflect his new role as backup centre back as you would imagine we will be getting first teamers in his position, he simply cannot be played at left back again in anything other than an emergency.

johnson just simply no, he was awful as left back defensively directly at fault in giving away goals and dangerous free kicks and barring the odd game has been a disappointment on the left wing over the last 3 years, we have to be able to find a better option than him.

Warnock loves Sol Bamba but he is 35 so not sure if he will be a target or not but I wouldn’t be surprised if Warnock still fancies he can do a job. He ticks the leader box anyway

You guys make a good point in regards to the club article. I would go for a 2 year deal on Johnson and 1 year for George
