Negotiations at the club

Do you know how much we bid? Do you know how much we paid? The idea of us just paying whatever is totally insane and a big reason if not the main reason why we ended up in such a state after we got relegated from the prem last time round.

Pay more for one, pay more for all.. even ‘a few million‘ is a lot of money to be throwing down the drain. It could easily be the difference between getting a good player or just having a hole in the squad where one should be.

To plays devis advocate say you pay more but get the player earlier. Like Hansen if we signed him a few weeks ago we may of paid a few hundred k more but he could of played against Doncaster Rovers. That could of enabled us to get through to next round of the cup by delaying the purchase you may save money but performances/ results on the pitch suffer as you don't have that player signed to play for you. By using time up on negotiations it can cost you valuable points and results that ultimately effects revenue the club generates. So you do have to balance that out.

By not signing players early enough you have a bad start, as we have done in several recent seasons which makes promotion extremely difficult. Promotion is worth hundreds of millions so it seems foolish to try and save a few quid in July if it derails the season before it has even begun.

The squad should be good enough to go before the final pre-season game. Any signings you make after that should be big opportunities you can't turn down. You shouldn't be starting a season with 1 centre forward and trying to do all your business when you are desperate. Why would anyone with any business sense think that leaving things until last minute will get you the cheapest price when the people you are buying from know how desperate you are.

We are landing the targets we want so far or have been linked to us. But seems like we spend weeks haggling then just pay the money in the end as we need the player. We don't hold much power in negotiations.

As with Brittain he was linked at start of pre season about a month back we bid 2.5 million they didn't accept it so we spent weeks locked into talks to only agree the price Blackburn set on the eve of the season as we needed a RWB for first game.
made up nonsense

Or if you just take what is available early at the price you want to pay you might not get the best players.

If it was as easy as some fans make out on here - all the teams would be doing it.

We also rarely know the details about transfer fees. Hamilton from last year for example - a lot of people quote 3million, but I remember reading an article saying the up front cost was closer to 1.

The fee for Whittaker is variably quoted as between 5 and 7m up front.

So we are all guessing except in occasional circumstances. This means that people who want to attack Scott/Gibson use the big numbers, people defending his business use the smaller numbers. We are all guessing.

We also do not know what the interest is in our player - transfers are like dominos - each one changes the circumstances of multiple clubs

We wouldn’t have beaten Donny Rovers with Hansen. It’s not just one either.. pay more for one pay more for all.

We probably would of beaten Doncaster with Hansen in the side as he has pace to burn what you needed against them sort of sides Sammy Silveria out the team was a massive miss.

I'm not talking about the costs necessarily. Yes, you might not get the very best player available if you buy early but if that very best player makes a 6 point difference over a season and you get them on deadline day when there's already been 12 points to play for then is it really worth it? Squads should be prepared for the end of the season, not the middles of September after the International break.

If you buy a good midfielder and a better one becomes available then buy them as well. Plenty of space in squads for more than one good player.

It is so hard to say isn't it.
It is far from ideal to bring in players so late but it could equally be agents playing the long game hoping that clubs will become desperate enough for fees to increase. They could be holding out on deals. At some point that might turn the other way and their players become the desperate ones.

Certainly, some of the players we have been holding out for Premier League interest. But just as with Hayden Hackney in the other direction Premier clubs have been maybe playing their own waiting game.

I guess we got have taken several players on loan, but have wanted to see what our budget is for purchases which is the first preference.

My guess is that the RVDB money less payment to Zwolle is available now for purchases and possibly the guaranteed money from Coburn.

With thise seasons purchases coming from what was left of the Latte Lath money.

But of course it all depends on how much Steve Gibson is willing to accept of the £12m annual running cost deficit and how much comes from transfer surpluses.

FFP allows a £12m annual loss.

So we spend all of our money on spuds we pick up for a million each on 1st August. Then we sell Hackney and Azaz for £30 million.

Your way works if you are top of the food chain. We aren't and are dependent on other clubs actions.

The good news is that the other clubs in the championship are in pretty much in the same position in the food chain as us. So though it may seem we are missing out, that's just because you aren't aware of the other gaping holes in other teams squads.

It will always be this way until the transfer window is moved to the beginning of the season. Cast your ire at the European leagues.

If you watched that game and felt we were one player away from beating Donny, then you’re more mad than I originally thought! 🤣

From GK to CF we were all over the place. As a team we simply weren’t at it or on it. No cohesion, gaping holes between the lines from defence to midfield to forwards. Couldn’t pass the ball. Gaping holes at the back. It was awful all over the pitch. Hansen can’t resolve all those issues.

The game has been used to write off many players, but as a collective unit, we were awful and a lot of players will end up looking like mugs in those circumstances.

There were was one bright spark in Kante but beyond that, most players had a horrendous night.

Re: The OP. We are all frustrated but I’ll be honest, I don’t know enough about what’s happening behind the scenes.

Without doubt, we could have got lesser players in quicker (we done that a couple of years ago - we ended up with the likes of Gilbert and Glover). Our “marquee” striker type signing (ELL) didn’t happen until middle-late August.

There are many moving parts and there’s a questions mark over the money side of things since the Rav transfer seemed to finalise the move for Hansen. We also seem to be taking our time in recruiting our genuine targets of particular character / skill set. That in itself can make negotiations harder if they’re prized assets at their respective clubs.

The squad is looking bloated with some deadwood which we also haven’t moved on yet. That may prove to be another challenge as the window progresses.

I would like all the business to be done now but it’s not always that simple without paying over the odds.

You can point fingers and say they’re all excuses etc. if you want but I think that’s part of the reality - probably some other factors involved too.

Just a quick fag packet imaginary scenario.. let’s say we needed the funds to buy players.. which has pretty much been explained to the fans to be the case (I think)

then you could be looking at something like this..

Jones: Whittaker
Latte Lath: Jones, Brittain, Kante
Coburn: Pandur, Turco
RVDB: Hansen, Arfsten, Gilchrist

Loans: Chido, Nypan

Hackney: Summer 2026
Rogers: Winter 2026
Palmer twins: Winter 2026 loans

Glover <> Pandur
Dijksteel <> Jones
RVDB <> Gilchrist
Clarke <> Pye
Smith <> Brittain
Howson <> Kante
Hackney <> Nypan
Engel <> Arfsten
Gilbert <> Whittaker
Jones <> Hansen
Coburn <> Turco
Latte <> Chido

an 11 man turnover as suggested by Craig Hignett combined with a ton of guesswork on my part. looks a bit easier to understand why we would be where we are right now.

(don’t say anything infront of this lot.. just blink twice if I have ANY of the above right)

I’ve slipped Ethan Pye in there.. just because why not. Maybe a few fringe players move onto pastures new and we have a bit of wiggle room the last day of the window.

Whatever we are doing every summer isn't F ING working is it?
Some bloke from down south who's never played foorball is picking the squad and he's bringing them in too late!

Chido and Nypan ain't coming to the Boro on loan. Any premier league loans we get will be defensive one's maybe a striker if we are lucky as they are unlikely to start ahead of Conway.

We made a lot of early moves for the previous two seasons. It seems he is trying something different by being considered and persisting with our targets over prolonged negotiations.

Up until April everyone was berating Carrick because the squad was clearly a playoff squad he was mismanaging - the story has now been rewritten he worked miracles to be within match of the playoffs with a bottom half squad.

Not sure.. if we’re going for a front two then Chido would presumably start alongside Conway as first choice. I’m guessing (these are just guesses btw) that if we were to sign Nupan on loan it would be to start alongside Morris if Hackney moves on. Canny little buffer until the Hackney money came through.. plus he might even be an option in the prem should we get promoted. Another season to develop the player for Man City and possibly another buffer till the prem money comes through.

Cashflow innit. I’m sure McCabe would benefit from going toe to toe with another quality midfielder.. could be mutually beneficial all round.
