There's no point in going into lockdown if when you come out of it you just do exactly the same thing.

The lockdown should be done in conjunction with an effective and working track and trace, so that when the R number falls below zero through the lockdown they can then control the number of subsequent cases, and also not offer "eat out to help out" schemes to convince people it's safe to do whatever they want again.

Lockdown then coming out of it, to go back into it later in the year, to then come back out again is just boom and bust by another name,

I am a bit undecided at the minute largely because I don't think under the current leadership it will help much. The thing is it will happen whether people want it or not and that may be enough to send some people into protests and clashes with police.

The government have never had a plan and it shows.

Surely they're should be a mechanism by which the people can correct a political mistake without having to wait 5 years to do so.

If we have a national lockdown it must include schools, colleges and universities or we are wasting our time.

We need to do something to try and rescue Christmas.

Exactly this, no half measures, no schemes encouraging us to go out, WFH unless absolutely not possible, etc. As has been mentioned, there absolutely must be an effective track and trace system in place

The government just don't have the credibility to implement it any longer. Only a new government (or at least a totally different cabinet) could ask for the public's co-operation again and expect to get it.

That's a very good point, and a crucially important one too.

They've lost the dressing room, stakeholder buy-in will be nigh on impossible after the catalogue of blunders they're responsible for

Such as the scenes seem in Rome, Berlin, Bologna, London.

The results of this poll will be those in cushy public sectors jobs or retired will be in favour of a lockdown and those of us who aren't in the public sector and rely on busineses been open to pay rents, mortgages, bills, food etc will be against a lockdown.

Unfortunately, this leadership won't walk until the transition period is over. So in the meantime we'll just have to continue making a mess of Covid until the Brexit mess is finished once and for all.

This PM's legacy will possibly be viewed more negatively than Thatcher or any other in living memory.

As Lizards said, you need a testing, track and trace system to find and isolate infections otherwise a lockdown isn't as effective as it should be.
This government, like Trump, let the genie out of the bottle early on and have since been fighting a losing battle trying to control the spread.
You can't absolve some of the public from blame either because no amount of on point messaging will change some people's behaviour.
To be honest, lockdown will only punish those who have been doing their bit anyways and it'll reflect well on the government as cases drop temporarily. However, without mass testing things will just spike again once lockdown is released.
In essence, we can discuss stats, theories, epidemiology and everything else on here until the cows come home, but without the government getting its act together sharpish we'll just be hitting play and repeat until we start having a vaccination program.
You only need to look to the US to see how desperate Trump is to deny the spread of the virus and promise that a vaccine will be here soon to see the way out of gross mismanagement.
