Nathan Wood responds to Neil Warnock's criticism of Hibs loan move

The defender didn't want to take the easy option in the summer and says it was his decision to move to Hibs

Nathan Wood has responded to Neil Warnock's criticism of his loan move to Hibs, with the defender saying he opted against taking the easy option in the summer because he didn't want to be "comfortable".

Wood has had to be patient at Hibs so far and only made his first appearance for the Scottish Premiership side last week.

That led Warnock to say he felt Wood had been given the "wrong advice" to move to Hibs in the summer when he felt what the teenage defender needed this season was regular football.

But Wood says it was his choice to go to Hibs.

The defender told the Daily Record : “Everyone has their opinions on him, but he’s fine with me.

“I just needed to get out of Middlesbrough to be honest as I didn’t really feel part of that squad or playing enough games at my age.

“That’s why I took it on myself to push for a loan. It was my decision. I could have gone to League One or stayed at Boro, but I didn’t want to just be comfortable.

“I wanted to push to play games in an environment like this where it’s hard to get into the team and you need to work hard to stay there.

“I’ve had to wait to get into the team, but I didn’t come here thinking it was going to be a breeze because this is a good team that has been winning games.

“When it comes to the things he said about whether this loan is right for me, it is up to me to make it a good loan. But I can only do that by training well and playing well.”

Wood had a difficult debut as Hibs were hammered at home by Dundee United but is hoping to keep his place in the side for this weekend's game against Aberdeen.

He said: “I was hoping that I could perform better and the team as well, but that is just football and it is something that you have to deal with.

“You will have bad performances and bad games and it is about how you bounce back.

“We are working hard to put things right. You have got to be positive and look ahead.”

* For what its worth: if we lose Nathan due to the obstinate stubborn attitude of the Manager [who claims this is his last season] - it will be a tragic loss of a good young player.
Hes been patient and its understandable why hes effectively said "goodbye".

If I was Steve Gibson reading that I’d be asking serious questions. That’s pretty damning yes it’s the daily record but those are attributable quotes.
I agree.
Hes played for the England youth team.
Hes got talent.
Hes been sat on the bench when he could have slotted in for injured players.
No wonder he`s pzzd off.
What a waste.
I have lost faith in Mr Warnock - especially calling out players when the responsibility is his.
I hope Nathan gets good experience and minutes - and can return next summer when we have a new Manager. (y)

Agree with everything written in this thread so far. Biggest worry are the quotes....

“I just needed to get out of Middlesbrough to be honest as I didn’t really feel part of that squad or playing enough games at my age."

Doesn't suggest there is much motivation for him to hang around here after the loan move. Not sure when he's out of contract, hopefully another couple of years at least.

Warnock just shouldn't be commenting on stuff like this it just seems like stirring the pot just because he can. I get that he might have been asked directly about the loan move by a journalist, but be professional and give a corporate answer, Warnock's being needlessly antagonistic.

let’s hope once Warnock has left the building that he finds the Club a much happier place to be for him.

When?

The one time we had two injured centre backs last season he played.

Though you could rightly argue he should have been given an opportunity at the end of last season when the play-offs were out of reach.

He'd left long before Hall and Fry got injured this season.

I find these quotes concerning as it doesn't make it sound like he'll be too keen to sign an extension, so we might lose him, but I also don't think he should be starting for us right now.
He's still one for the future for me, though I'd be all for integrating him as a rotation player next season.

Warnock`s arrogance appears to cloud his judgement.
A professional Manager keeps thoughts like that in his office, not splashed all over the media.
Hes had his career - now let the kids have theirs (y)

Absolutely Gibson should be asking questions.
What's a snotty 19 year old kid doing mouthing off about his manager like that for?
I imagine Gibson knows a bit more about Woods potential progress than Woods does.
Hes been sat on the bench when he could have slotted in for injured players.

If he'd stayed here like Warnock wanted him to do then maybe he would have slotted in for injured players.
Wood says in the article it was him who insisted on the loan.

You cant blame Warnock for everything even if you want to desperately.

Sounds more like Warnock wanted him to go on loan somewhere he would be a guaranteed starter rather than sit on the bench. Judging from this.

“That led Warnock to say he felt Wood had been given the "wrong advice" to move to Hibs in the summer when he felt what the teenage defender needed this season was regular football.”

Yeah I don’t think Warnock has said too much wrong and I don’t think Wood’s response was bad either.

Warnock wanted him to go somewhere he will play which is fair enough and Wood wanted to go somewhere challenging which is also fair enough.

I want to do no such thing "desperately" or otherwise.
Thats not how it goes with me.
Im too old to be pushing childish agendas.

I want Middlesbrough to succeed, no matter who the Manager.
As I have said before and will say it again:

Managers come and go like buses, but we remain loyal to our club and want the best.

There have been too many times when Warnock has called agents, players and refs for his own failings.
He has a respected history, but he has a habit of putting his ego before the players.

He blames agents, refs, individual players.....which deflects criticism from him and places it at others doorsteps.

Nathan has the potential to be the best defender to come through our youths since the mid 80s when Mogga, Cooper and Parky came through. He could potentially be better. We have to make sure when the Warnockasaurus leaves, that some of these youths are rehabilitated back into the first team squad. We have a couple of young players that have effectively been excluded for no apparent reason other than Warnock stubbornly doesn't fancy them

What’s the difference between the challengers at hibs to boro. He has to break into the team here too.

thinking about it the only thing that would be plausible in my mind is if he was told he wasn’t part of the plans at all

Why is Warnock getting grief for stating the obvious? Sitting on Hibs’ bench was hardly a good move for him, he needs a season playing week in week out (would need to be league 1, he won’t get into any Champo teams) to show if he’ll make it or not.
