My choice for Boro manager, Darren Ferguson.

I'm going to be a bit controversial here but Darren Ferguson would be my choice. Here is my reasons:
1- will adjust formation depending on opposition but mainly built around variations of 5-3-2.
2- knows how to develop a good striker and had a good history of getting his strikers scoring goals
3- Good overall win %
4- has had 4 promotions as a manager.
5- 50yo so is still young as a manager but has plenty of experience.
6- Is Alex Fergusons son, this statement will probably also be controversial but he has openly admitted seeking advice from his dad in the past, also Alex Ferguson is still a big name with lots of contacts in the football world.
7- Out of work so fits that usual criteria.
I'm not expecting many people to agree with me on this one lol. I used to go watch The Posh play when I lived in Lincolnshire and I always thought he had his team playing decent football, and wasn't afraid to give player a verbal kick up the backside when needed.
Overall it doesn't really matter what I think as luckily for everyone I'm not the one making the decision 😂

Always done well in League 1 - never in the Championship - unless you are planning for next season?

Isn't that mainly down to him managing League 1 standard teams (newly promoted) in the Championship?

There can't be that much difference in terms of management in managing a League 1 team to managing a Championship team surely.

No. He took over Preston the season after they made the championship playoffs in 2009-10 . He was sacked within a year.
