Music you discovered later in life

John Prine ... didn’t follow him in the 70’s when he first entered the scene as “the next Bob Dylan“ but caught on to him late 90’s and have followed him since. An American storyteller legend who will be greatly missed. His 1971 debut “John Prine” and his 2018 final “Tree of Forgiveness” are masterful bookends for a wonderful career. Thankfully, there are lots of his performances on YouTube. RIP Dear Friend!

I believe Stockton Folk Club have a new home elsewhere now, I met the couple who run it just before the lockdown. Sadly The Young 'Uns have long since moved on.
Harry - havent been to Stockton for a night our since the early 80`s (!!!)
I remember the Fiesta in its final days and a pub I think was called something like The Green Man?
Always a bit bleary eyed....:p

Oh, I agree it has its place for many, just not in my collection. I wont say there are absolutely no tracks that I could never listen to, I have tried to enjoy some but always failed, I have never owned an album by AC/DC, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden etc
Shake out that....

Never liked Bruce Springsteen from 'Born to Run' onwards until hearing 'Nebraska' and 'Tom Joad' a few years after they came out. That would be about 20 years?

About 4 or 5 years ago I heard Mark Kermode on tv talking about how he had discovered Neil Young. At the same time I had just decided to stop being a Neil Young fan after about 40 years!

Can't believe came on her to mention John Prine and found out that he had already been mentioned for first time today.
Benn a folkie all my life but also had a love for Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris since the 70's. Through Jackson Browne I came across John Prine on you tube about 5 years ago and was blown away.

Through him and You Tube came across a whole range of other artists who deserve a listen. Iris DeMent, Steve Goodman, Guy Clarke, Tom Russell..theres a whole genre of these supposedly 'country music' players out there who are totally different to the big cowboy hats and boots of my youth.

I discovered Ed Kuepper in 1994 playing in a small club in Manchester, then realised 20 years earlier he'd been the main man in the punk band The Saints who had a couple of UK hits. Mesmerised on the night and bought everything he's done before and since. He's the Godfather of Australian rock, their Neil Young

Do you play/sing yourself Norfolk? I just ask because most people who identify as a 'folkie' tend to partake themselves.

I play the guitar and sing to myself Harry but am now at an age where even my wife tells me to stop singing. Before I moved down here 30 odd years ago Mrs Norfolk and I were regular attendees at the Cutty Wren in Redcar and also the Pied Piper in Osmotherly, which was actually the first place I ever took her out to. Memories!

Cant beat this...

You can beat it with Ella singing 'How High the Moon' on the 'Mack the Knife/Live in Berlin' album.

Under 30, I would never have time for any music my parents liked. It's different now when you go to concert (if there were any) and see two, or even three, generations of familes in the audience.

Been listening to Slow Dive for the past few nights before bed on my headphones.

This been by far my favourite tracks. Full immersive experience listening to these guys on headphones compared to a standard music player or in the car.
