Boro flashback: 30 / 03 / 1974 My favourite season & favourite Boro team

This day back in 1974 the mighty Boro traveleld to Kenilworth Road to face our nearest challenges Luton Town, after guarenteeing promotion the previous saturday & after a 20 year wait, we are back in the 1st divison, when Dave Armstrong scored the only goal of the game with a 1-0 win at home to Oxford, now we stand 90 minutes away from securing the 2nd divison championship with 6 games remaining, though TBH, we were a team in waiting after beating Bristol City back in September the 29th

Thousands travlled down to see the mighty Boro clinch the championship, a soccer special was put on with all carriages full as it departed Middlesbrough station

David Mills scored the only goal of the game, Boro were champions & going up in style
Great days indeed & very fortunate & privileged to be old enough to appreciate that team, thanks dad x

Big Jack's Boro team:

Jim Platt - Ever present up to that point
John Craggs - Ever present up to that point

David Mills - 10th goal of the season
John Hickton - A Boro iconic legend & my favourite Boro player of all time

New roof on the South Stand and stronger Floodlights and that was it
That's quality, I remember not long after reading the EG with pictures of how they were going to develop AP, including adding boxes to the North Stand & the artists impression was awesome, the new holgate was going to be the east stand, IIRC

I always liked the look of those foreign circular stadiums at the time, and hoped one day AP would be totally covered (I dont know why?)
I miss the floodlights and the clatter of the heavy seats as the bounced the sound ricocheting and echoing when in the ground early, the differences in the stands, the biggest thing I miss is the view from my seat in the North Stand centre upper, the roof line made it like a big 26 inch colour TV on night games.

The curve of the pitch a crown pitch according to my old fella, although looked very green was balding and patchy when on it.

Seen like most fans many great players on Ayresome park, but the biggest thrill was Wigan Athletic at home the night we were promoted, it was like we laid the curse/ghost to rest. We even got to Wembley from there eventually.

I've got used to the Riverside now and I like it, but despite the ancient facilities at AP, I felt like it was alive like a relative:).
It felt like it was sacred compared to town hall or big buildings, they didnt have the presence the football ground had. It always caught my breath when I seen it.
I suppose it was the same at every ground, but I do miss Roker Park and the Baseball ground, to mention a few, they had a look and felt important.
I think the biggest disappointment of my life was Wembley Stadium in the ZDS, although a day of massive significance to us, it was a s hit tip and after the real finals of the FA cup and FLC walking into Cardiff although bitter cold that day it beat Wembley all ends up for me. The new Wembley is top o mind.

Sorry for the long post.
