More experience aded to squad

I think we’ll sign Paterson too. I haven’t seen much in the last few pre-season games, but he’s been injured, and its about what he’s been doing in training too. He’s decent enough and has plenty of championship experience. Warnock knows him and I think we’ll offer him a short term deal, either til January or for the season.

More nonsense. Please stop!

Paterson is one of those ones that will lead to posters complaining of being 'underwhelmed' but to my mind it's a squad game and players like that have to work hard to get their next contract. We've seen it ourselves with players like Assombalonga, Fletcher et al, you bring players in on massive, four-year deals and the incentive isn't there in the same way it is for someone like Paterson. If Paterson does well then he gets another deal - and the team will benefit - but if he doesn't then we can move him on quickly rather than have to try and manage it for another two or three years.

Boro need to bring in players with hunger, with a point to prove. We have our key players, our assets, tied down. We're now building the squad and will need people like Paterson, Bamba, Peltier, etc to come in and do a job on and off the pitch. Also, Bamba and Paterson came in and trained to try and impress and earn a contract. It reflects well on them. I imagine people were 'underwhelmed' by the signing of Duncan Watmore at the time he was training/earning his contract but look what happened there.

Many on here were underwhelmed by Watmore. He was my player of the season last year.

We look to have lost more goals and assists from the squad than we've replaced. That is a massive concern for me. But you never know, big Ikpeazu might help Watmore, Tav, Crooks etc. get an extra five or six each this season.

I think injuries to Tav, Fry, Hall and Dijksteel for big chunks of last season were our undoing, along with dreadful seasons from Britt, Fletcher & Akpom. Barnsley and Bournemouth (I think) scored a similar number of goals to us last time out, so a slight improvement at either end of the pitch could see us climb the league.

We are painfully weak in defensive cover and up front, assists and pace are a worry too.

We live in hope of a good season as always though.

We desperately need numbers so I'm not against it.

Out of interest would posters rather Patterson got 10 games or whatever for us next season or Sivi?

It is interesting because we've moved players on and it doesn't 'feel' like we've replaced them adequately in terms of covering their goals and assists but we're not far off it, with plenty of scope and time to do more business.

Johnson, Assombalonga, Fletcher, Bolasie, Saville, Kebano, Mendez-Laing - those seven got 21 goals and 18 assists between them.
Crooks, Ikpeazu, Paterson(if he signs), Ameobi - those four got 18 goals and 10 assists, and in teams that all finished a long way below us.

Four players can almost match the goal output of seven, which is decent business really because they will cost way, way less than the seven who have left since the end of last season. Put them alongside better players and in a stronger team then there is no reason they can't beat their output this season.

We have lost eight assists - presumably this is where Payero comes in. And we know Warnock wants another striker and probably a winger. Bolasie is still without a club. I wouldn't be surprised to see him join us again. The type of manager Warnock is, he says he wants one or two more and brings in four if he can. If we are tighter at the back then we will only need a handful more goals at the other end to have a better season. I think we want a 10-15 goal player if possible. If we add that then we are flying, IMO.

I'm optimistic.

Left back needs addressing too, although he did say Bola may be fit for Fulham.

I agree three or four good quality signings will transform us. A fifteen goal striker, a LCB/LB a bit of pace and trickery to play wide or as a support striker and a spark in midfield (Payero hopefully).

Hopefully we'll finally crack scoring from set pieces this season after a few very poor years.

Do you think we'll stick 4-3-3 or maybe line up 4-2-3-1?

I just don't think we have wide forwards/wingers to play a 4-3-3/4-5-1, although obviously a few signings could change this. We really don't have the players for 3 at the back IMO, no real RWB and Coulson looks the only option for LWB, but he seems to be on his way out.

in the games I've seen him whilst he has been on trialhes done NOTHING to suggest he's busting a gut to win a contract. stay clear!!!!! future boo boy if he is given a contract!!!!

Agree with you on what we need - cover for Bola, we needed that last season so would be good to get that done.

I think he will go for a 4-3-3/4-51 as it stands - Lumley, Dijksteel, Hall, Fry, Bola, Morsy, Crooks, McNair, Tav, Watmore, Ikpeazu.

I find it interesting that the two young players to emerge over the past 18 months or so - Coulson and Spence - are wing backs. The first team don't really play that way so fascinating how two orthodox wing backs can emerge from an academy set-up(I know Spence joined from Fulham, but still).

I agree Viv, think he’s definitely looking at 4 at the back. I’m not sure Bola (as much as he can on last season) meets Warnock’s requirements, hence us looking at Brown.
