Money saving tips

I thought it would be useful to start a thread highlighting money saving tips to share / add to for everyone's benefit. A friend told me about a Prepayment Prescription deal she has signed up to. She now saves over £10 a month on her and her sons prescriptions a month.

Hopefully the link works. Thanks.

I recently downloaded the Snoop app for my personal finance apps and it's been interesting getting to see spending trends all brought together from current, joint and credit card accounts. It's also useful for scheduling when I'll be looking for new utility/insurances etc. deals.

Definitely made me think twice about many items when shopping over the past few weeks now that I see the charts of monthly and annual spending in the supermarket.

Great idea for a thread.

The biggest tips I have is turn the heating down one degree, you wont really notice most of the time, turn lights off when leaving rooms, some houses seem like Blackpool illuminations at times (an old saying of my dad), Don’t leave electrical items on standby all the time either.

Our water bill has gone down using a Water Hippo In The Cisterns

There are some great ideas on the Money saving expert site. Range from money grants to free holidays for some and ideas on coping with bills or debt.

I've knocked the room thermostat down to 18.5 and banned lights being switched on during daylight hours. Welcome lights outside the house won't be switched on unless one of the family is returning home late. I'll look into the water hippo thing too.

I'm determined to make some savings 🤣

Topcashback is another good idea if you haven't signed up yet...get family etc invloved...it all adds up, I've had over £600 in the three years I've been with them.

I got a google nest thermostat 6 months ago and love it. Not only does it work intelligently & efficiently, it just makes me & partner much more aware of usage & temps, so everyone buys into keeping the temps lower. the history reporting software etc on the app is fantastic.

When they wired open therm there more efficient again .

I've looked at electrical items differently since getting a smart electric meter. I know some people hate them or come up with conspiracy theories about tracking usage and far more bizarre (I've read everything😂).

The first thing to note is they don't save you money. That's the usual argument I hear is 'my electricity costs the same since I've had it fitted'. I'm sorry but it will do unless you make changes.

That said it shows very clearly what's a big user of electric. You turn on kettles and toasters etc and it jumps into the Red. I had an old freezer (I say old 8 years) and it would go into the Red whenever it kicked in. I bought a new A energy rated one before Xmas and doesn't even go into the Amber.

It's not saving me loads. Yet it is a visual representation of high use items. Again not for everyone. I find it useful (although a bit depressing when heating on lol).

It’s probably easier to google open therm to understand it but if yours want wired that way it’s probably not worth getting it re-wired .
Older boiler like baxi duo Tec’s aren’t open therm ready but newer boilers are .

oh right. I had a new combi fitted at the same time, so it is open therm and they work great together - very impressed

The device they left me for monitoring energy use I left on for about a fortnight then turned it off . At the end of the day I need the fridge and tv on so there’s not way I can save money all
I’m doing is wasting a few coppers by having the monitoring device plugged in
