Mobile phones for kids

My daughter will be 11 soon and I can't hold out any longer.

I've looked online but everything's either out of date, 404 or unavailable. Very strange.

I've had good advice on here in the past on phones so thanks in advance everyone (y)

Good luck on that one fella. Trying to tell a 11 year old she can have a phone but no add ons like the internet etc like all her mates will be a tough call.

?? where did I say no add-ons?

Sorry should have put some specs in:

- must be Android
- upfront one-off cost up to £150 is OK if monthly £10-15 or so
- it will mostly use wi-fi so not a lot of data/calls will be needed
- not sure if I missed anything?

Yes that's the kind of thing, phone outright and with SIM only - what's a good SIM deal these days? I'm well out of date

I'm with 3 - pay £10.50 a month for 6Gb data & unlimited voice/text but sometimes the coverage is lacking a bit (Much better than it used to be but oddly some cities like Cambridge you are struggling)

I hear good things about GiffGaff but I'm not in a position to advise.

Are mobile phones like trainers used to be for 11 year olds, it has to be a fashionable or I am not leaving the house?

Just done a bit more research - apparently Virgin don't charge data for using Whatsapp... Seeing that's what she's on all the time (using her mum's phone) that's probably the one to go for!

I have a MotoG phone and for the money its excellent. If you dont go for the newest model you can get some great deals(and actually the newest models are worth it). Will an 11 year old know if it a 6-7 or 8 model.
I have a sim only contract with 3 and get unlimited texts, minutes on calls and 12 GB data for around £12. Coverage is excellent round where I live. Three have a GoRoam which lets you use phone in 71 countries just as if you were in the UK. It saved us a fortune when we went to Australia as one example.

Nobody charges for WhatsApp as far as I know thats why people use it. So dont let that influence your choice of supplier.

For all the trouble I have with Virgin Media, Virgin Mobile are good. (Unlimited txts, minutes and 12GB for £6 p.m. SIM only.) My two foster kids have this and they chose Huaweii phones, which are excellent. I installed Qustodio so I can control and monitor their internet/apps / social media etc. I can also set what times of day they can use their phones and the total amount of time they are allowed to use it. This costs about £30 per year.

I also have Motorola Moto G, great phone for the price. It's a Moto G5 still going strong.
MotoG comes out top in all the reviews for best budget phone

I think he was on about Virgin not charging for data for using WhatsApp.
There is another service out there wh

There are some contracts available now that do t use your data up if you are using social media , VOXI for example.

I am with giff gaff as is my wife and daughter. They are good if the whole family use giff gaff. for a fiver a month you get unlimited texts, unlimited calls to giff gaff, not sure how many minutes to non-giff gaff don't know how much data for the fiver though. I have a 10 pound bundle and get unlimited texts/calls (and in europe) and I think 6 gb of data but I never go near my data limits so I may have got that wrong.
