Mitrovic - Now the dust settled

96.2 Physical contact or attempted physical contact: physical actions (or attempted actions) that are unlikely to cause injury to the Match Official but are nevertheless confrontational, examples include but are not limited to: pushing the Match Official or pulling the Match Official (or their clothing or equipment); and
Reading the rule book, I would say a 182 day ban. It was a 96.2 offence.

What did di Canio get?

If he doesn't get a lengthy ban, I fear for referees as sunday league players often copy what they see on TV.
That’s a LONG stretch! Even if it was applied today he’d be looking at missing the start of the season, back end of September. Them the rules!

I would have though Fulham would recall Muniz.. which would be great if he got a shot in the prem. Can he go back to Fulham now if the loan is cancelled? I’d like to see him be involved in our promotion in some way..

After that incident I expected to see refs 'diving' on a regular basis. After all it is de rigueur for players to do it so why not officials.
Also, having more female officials is inevitable. I wonder what effect that will have on Mitrovic and other hotheads and on how they are punished.
That's what I'd like to see. If any contact the ref to throw themselves to the ground and roll around clutching their faces 😁

From the FA Handbook:

OFFENCES AGAINST MATCH OFFICIALS
Categories of Offence
96 The three categories of offence against Match Officials are as follows:
96.1 Threatening behaviour: words or action that cause the Match Official to believe that they are being threatened. Examples include but are not limited to: the use of words that imply (directly or indirectly) that the Match Official may be subjected to any form of physical abuse either immediately or later, whether realistic or not; the raising of hands to intimidate the Match Official; pretending to throw or kick an object at the Match Official.
96.2 Physical contact or attempted physical contact: physical actions (or attempted actions) that are unlikely to cause injury to the Match Official but are nevertheless confrontational, examples include but are not limited to: pushing the Match Official or pulling the Match Official (or their clothing or equipment); and
96.3 Assault or attempted assault: acting in a manner which causes or attempts to cause injury to the Match Official (whether or not it does in fact cause injury), examples include, but are not limited to, causing and/or attempting to cause injury by spitting (whether it connects or not), causing and/or attempting to cause injury by striking, or attempting to strike, kicking or attempting to kick, butting or attempting to butt, barging or attempting to barge, kicking or throwing any item directly at the Match Official.

Sanction range (Suspension)
A Disciplinary Commission shall impose an immediate suspension within a range based on the category of offence committed (as set out below). A Disciplinary Commission shall take all aggravating and mitigating factors into account, including, but not limited to, those listed in paragraph 102, when determining the level of sanction within the range.
Unless otherwise stated, the lowest end of the applicable range shall operate as a standard minimum suspension. A Disciplinary Commission may impose an immediate suspension in excess of the upper limit in circumstances where aggravating factors of significant number or weight are present.
Threatening behaviour:
101.1 suspension from all football activity for a period of between 56 days and 182 days. The recommended entry point, prior to considering any mitigating or aggravating factors, is 112 days.
101.2 a fine of up to £100, with a mandatory minimum fine of £50.
101.3 an order that the Participant completes an education programme before the time-based suspension
is served.
Physical contact or attempted physical contact:
101.4 suspension from all football activities for a period of between 112 days and 2 years. The recommended entry point, prior to considering any mitigating or aggravating factors is 182 days.
101.5 a fine of up to £150, with a mandatory minimum fine of £75.
101.6 an order that the Participant completes an education programme before the time-based suspension
is served or within 28 days of the Disciplinary Commission’s decision, whichever is the later.
Assault or attempted assault:
101.7.1 immediate suspension from all football activity for a period of between 5 years and 10 years, subject to the following:
101.7.2 where the Participant is aged 14 or under, the standard minimum suspension shall be 2 years; and
101.7.3 where any assault causes serious injury to the Match Official, the standard minimum suspension shall
be 10 years.
101.8 an order that the Participant completes an education programme before the time-based suspension is served

So Mitrovic clearly committed an offence under 96.2, the sanction for which is dealt with under 101.4 to 101.6. The starting point for a suspension would appear to be 182 days (six months).
Apologies. These appear to be in the section of the regulations that apply to players playing in the National League and below. I can’t find an equivalent set of regs regarding for those playing offences against match officials for those playing at elite level though, so it might just be badly ordered and they may apply to all players (plus I don’t know whether it’s relevant that the offence was in the FA Cup rather than the Premier League).

I can’t imagine that the disciplinary regulations are more lenient for elite players though. If they are, that would be sending all the wrong messages.

The blame lies with the player. The referee doesn’t need to tell the players beforehand that assaulting him will be deemed unacceptable.
But how many times have you seen a Ref taking shoite from a player without the back up of the FA as a whole. I would have loved to have seen refs giving out 10 yellows for being surrounded and hounded but his next stop would be in front of the FA. Players from abroad seemed to be the ones who get into refs faces and think it's right and it will change the game, it never happens but they still do.

Also brings the game into disrepute.
Cantana got 9 months. Mitovic should get a least the same and I'd like to see a full season.
As has been said.... kids watch this and copy their heros. Referees should be protected.

And BTW he should also be suspended without pay by his club to hit him where he'd really feel it... in the pocket. But they'll do nowt.

Referees should be protected, but it's nowhere near as bad an act as Cantona's flying kick.

I think a ban lasting for the rest of this season would be sufficient.

And that is where the Club will be condoning his actions and if they do they should rightly be brought in front of the FA, but as the FA is ran by Dinosaur's nothing will happen.

OK we'll just have to disagree.

Up and down the Country refs are leaving because of violence, abuse and threats. This is an ideal opportunity to send a potent message. A handful of games is not enough.

I don't think an 11 match ban is a handful, that's a sizeable ban.

The weekend demonstrated further evidence of the lowering of respect for the officials. Yes you can understand frustrations but when it gets to the point where you are shouting in the refs face then it has to stop. Also the Wolves v Leeds game at the end saw the Wolves bench tread dangerously close to over intimidation with the 4th official which I didn't like to see at all.

Lots of footballers behave like big babies. It's pathetic. Ref's do a really difficult job in a fast moving game. It's about time players showed them some respect. What the players do on a Saturday, the youth will do on a Sunday - I don't buy into the "footballers should be role models" thing really, but kids do copy them unfortunately, so its no wonder grass root referees get abused and attacked regularly.

Ban him.

Many years ago when Southgate was our captain, there was a movement to only allow Captains approach the ref. That lasted about 3 games and then everyone forgot about it. Its time that the FA woke up and did something about it for the good of the wider game.

Completely agree, they should have never got rid of the move the ball forward 10 yards for dissent rule either.
