BBC Radio 4 and Peston today focused on missing workers in the UK economy. I would guess other media channels also carried similar stories.
The stories tend the focus on 50-64 year olds who are not working and its implied they are the main reason behind the increase in job vacancies and low economic growth. The article below does not agree.
Two academics have addressed the issue in this articlen which uses detailed recent Government Stats. The academics appear to me as left of centre liberal types, reading their profiles. They are certainly not right wing little Englanders.
Interesting that net immigration has increased in the UK since 2019. Also its rural areas are struggling the most to fill vacancies both in 2019 and 2022 (I would say high rents and low pay is a big issue and rural to urban immigration of younger people).
I would agree with the authors that different areas of the UK need quite different solutions. By applying single UK policies and ignoring major geographical differences is crazy.
