Middlesbrough v Luton Town - Matchday Thread

Woodgate's press conference this morning indicated that Friend & Shotton could be back in the squad for tomorrow's game.

Fry took a knock but should be fine.

Ayala still 3-4 weeks away.

Dijksteel should be back next week and could be involved in a couple of friendlies to get him back up to speed.

No update on Roberts who is out long-term.

All others are assumed to be fit and ready(y)

Such a shame about Roberts, he really looked like he had that 'x-factor' like Juninho, Tomlin, Traore and 1 or 2 other legends.

hope we can get him back next season and he can be Injury free. He could be the difference in us having an average season and a great season next year imo

Agree.

Looked like he could be a very good loan signing for us.

I'd definitely look at getting him back on loan for next season.

I'm hoping Dijksteel can still come good, when he's fit.

We'll see tomorrow whether there's more to Spence not starting than just tiredness.
With both Friend and Shotton available, we could still play 3 at the back and have Howson at RWB.

Has Shotton become one of those who gets better every week while injured?

He is not very good remember!

Ayala is the only one we miss in my opinion and if shotton gets ahead of Spence or Howson then woodgates head has gone!

don’t think anyone has said that have they?

Having said that, if Fry doesn’t pick his form up I’d be tempted to play Friend or Shotton instead of him, would give him opportunity to play himself into some for now though.

I don’t see how you can turn the return of experienced defenders into the match day squad a negative

More of a quote on how players become better thought of when they are injured than a negative.

Totally agree on Fry sometimes just needs to put his foot through a clearance. We seem to have this thing where we knock balls down to the edge of our own box, Fry is not the only one guilty of that to be fair.

Yeah I agree that does happen a lot, but I’m not sure it’s happened in Shotton’s case. Certainly not on this thread anyway

If George gets any sort of form together he could be very useful. Him at lb, coulson at left mid. Though I don't think either of our strikers is really good enough to justify two up top and they don't really complement each other.

Like to see Spence back tomorrow to add that pace and energy, definitely give Morrison another go as well.
Need to win tomorrow, both Wigan and Barnsley have tough games so a good opportunity to create a gap.

JW stated before a ball was kicked that he wanted to instil a high-energy brand of football to excite the fans at the Riverside, as well as blooding some of the academy players. “We want to get fans on the edge of their seat. We want as many fans back in the stadium as we can by playing attacking, exciting football with high pressure, pressing in different areas

With new additions in Mark Bola from Blackpool & Marcus Browne from West Ham & the promise of more to come it look exciting times on Teesside & a totally different world to what Boro fans had been use to for a good few seasons
It hasn't always gone to plan for Woodgate, has he found the right formula, is he improving in his role, are the Boro
That game certainly indicated what we will see from the Boro this season, errors, silly goals conceded, mused chances & an improvement in the Boro's pattern of play

Newly promoted Luton Town came up as champions from the 1st division & Boro met for the opening weekend fixtures live on sky & which produced a thrilling end to end 3- 3 match
Both teams have struggled at the wrong end of the championship with Boro slowly dragging themselves away from the danger zone, Luton on the other hand have been entranced in the bottom 3 & where I expect they will stay for the remainder of the season

Luton were the final league visitors to Ayresome Park in April 1995 in the emotionally charged stadium

Played / represented Boro & Luton

Bruce Rioch started his career at Luton playing 149 games between 1964-69
Colin Todd finished his playing career at Luton, playing 2 games in 1984
John O'Rourke played 64 games for the Boro & 84 for Luton
Phil Boersma played 47 games for the Boro & 36 for Luton
Chris Kamara played 5 games for the Boro & 49 for Luton
Ben Roberts played 16 games for the Boro & 19 games over two spells for Luton
Marlon Beresford played 10 games for the Boro & 116 for Luton
Thomas Craddock played 4 games for the Boro & 74 for Luton
Signed by Luton during the summer
Martin Cranie Played 9 games for the Boro
Jacob Butterfield Played 31 games for the Boro

Yeah, i was just about to say that about the weather too. Depending on how bad it gets, it could have an impact. From what I understand, it's meant to be worse tomorrow than today, so fingers crossed.
