Middlesbrough Supporters Forum Raise Concerns Over Away Support

You would think that in this day and age these people who act like morons especially at away games could be identified and their season tickets revoked and if they’ve been given a ticket via a season ticket holder, trace the ticket sale back to whoever and revoke their season ticket. I enjoy away games, the atmosphere and banter is generally first class but does get tarnished by the di##heads who go to get high and pi$$ed. What makes me laugh though is most of them wouldn’t say boo to a goose when sober!!
Yes, there does need to be an initiative to address this otherwise all the decent fans will be driven away and left with the dross.

I no longer go to away games here in the south as too many coked / p!ssed up idiots off their face. I was no angel in my youth, but cant be @rsed seeing it at footy games. My southern born bred son, and a massive Boro fan (thru me) , has pretty much jacked in going to games in the area also. At the Reading game, he was on his phone when a Boro lad (I wont call him a fan), heard his southern accent, and starting sniffing him as he followed him around the concourse, saying "I smell a local etc" . Son laughed it off and tried to explain it to the nutter, but it definitely spooked him. Shame really,

Gazette running with it now, no doubt the national media will get hold of it and the Facebook pages etc. Just another stick to beat the dirty northern b***ds with.

If multiple women are getting groped at matches by drunken and drugged up Boro fans, then we deserve every bit of bad coverage we get.

No, the drunken and drugged up boro fans deserve the bad coverage. Not, the whole Middlesbrough fan base which is who will inevitably get the blame. Do you think the national media is going to run with “ minority of away boro fans” No they’ll run with “Boro fans” as a blanket term.

I doubt it.

People reading the articles might tar us all with the same brush, but there's no chance that the media are going to claim it's all Boro fans.

It needs covering by the national media, it's a serious issue and I'm glad the club have taken the steps to highlight and address it after the complaints.

Trying to deflect and minimise it isn't helping anyone.

I object to our fans being derided and smeared as thugs and tw*ts - especially by some on here who havent been to an away game since before Stevenson`s Rocket was invented.

The away games are usually well ordered and fans have behaved in a civilised manner.
Isolating football and particular fans, is a tactic to demean all of us and use the big fist to crack a small nut.
If you want to isolate organised gangs of racists and thugs - dont tar the huge majority of us fans with the same brush.
Dont fall for the big lie that its "football"(s) problem.

Those who pontificate from a high self - appointed moral platform are just hypocrites and no better than the National Media who hate the Game as much as they hate the working class.

I have been going to away games since I was a kid and now in my mid 30s.

It has never been perfect - I remember a fan threatening me after I called out his racist abuse of beni Mccarthy years ago. It was always horrible at Liverpool - a mix of Boro fans chanting about poverty in Liverpool (ridiculous from Teessiders) racism against the Spanish contingent and generally fans there for a **** up in the city and not the football.

I'm no angel, but also think fans as a whole need to start calling out behaviour. One voice calls it out - they are likely to end up with a fist to the face (I was told to it was to risky to speak out a number of times over the years).

It may not be what everyone wants - but I want an atmosphere where first and foremost everyone (young, old, disabled, male, female, gay, straight, and all races) can enjoy watching the football.

If you want to have a gang that goes gets off their heads and shouts abuse at lads from other towns - do that away from the football.

The idea that this was always the case is not true - it developed from the 60s to the 80s had a significant improvement in the 90s when football became more welcoming. Now some people are longing for the point that football was 90 percent youngish men.

For those that have contacted MSF via the website regarding this issue / own experiences, Thank you. I plan to contact each of you next week and we will also be meeting again with MFC to discuss further. It seems to have given supporters a bit of platform to speak out and highlight the issues. MSF are also working with local media to keep this subject in the spotlight. You may have heard some bits on Tees today. I will provide updates as and when i can.
