Middlesbrough Supporters Forum Raise Concerns Over Away Support

If that's how you feel Gene that's fine. I don't see an issue. Rather it was an open pint than the bottles full of spirit in a soft drink bottle that people take to the ground.
The point in question Tom is that although you don’t find the situation an issue, taking alcohol to your seat at the moment is contravening the stadium rules. Rules are there for a specific reason and as such should be adhered to irrespective whether you personally don’t have issue with it or otherwise.

No but they are breaking the law aren't they.

What if everyone else in the ground thought the same and just started bringing drinks into the viewing area?

It's about standards.
It hasnt stopped alcohol - related problems though has it?
So what do you propose?
You can be drunk when you take your seat.

I propose that we obey the rules as they are. I don't have solutions to alcohol problems, never claimed to have any either.

Gene - this is not aimed at you personally - I know you wont take offence. But its good we are all recognising the issues exist and are discussing them. (y)

"We" "obey the law" - so what are "we" going to do about those who dont?
What are "we" doing about the sale and use of illicit substances going on in the ground?
Telling people to "obey the law" - doesnt work.
It hasnt stopped the heroin trail from Afghan to every port and airport in the UK.
It hasnt stopped the procurement of Charlie or Weed or MDMA.
So there has to be a more joined up way - and that means a meeting of minds - from the local police, the club, the fans and clinical professionals.
Sticking the fist or the boot in - arresting people doesnt work
Up steps a willing seller every time you bring one up before the courts.
Talk of "stiffer sentences" amounts to nothing.
This is a societal problem and we cant close our eyes to it.
I put a few practical steps forward - which should have been thought of many years ago - they are basic steps aimed at prevention. Why doesnt the club look at those?

I think its just a matter of respecting others around you.
sadly this country has lost the habit of respect, it's become libertarian, any kind of empathy is seen as sad by circa 10% of the population. It's been brewing for a decade but really accelerated through the political landscape we live in.

Sorry Roofie, I don't have the answers to how we solve the worlds societal issues.

We need a reboot starting with politicians who lead by example and set the right standards but that isn't going to happen any time soon.

As I said in another thread, I saw a group of lads who thought it was acceptable and not bothering anyone else to "vape" throughout the Millwall game. A steward less than 3 or 4 yards away looking right at them clearly didn't have the skills or inclination to do anything about it. Empowering those stewards and making them effective in dealing with the issues that this thread was actually started about would be a small step in the right direction.

Paying for a police drug dog to do the rounds at turnstiles and issuing banning orders might work if the club are willing to pay to help eradicate the issue.

Would help the local police to identify supply lines - so they should be grateful for a captive audience paying to be sniffed at.

The police dont charge breweries or public houses to deal with the fall out of alcohol intoxication on a Friday and Saturday night - so why charge a football club?
Its more effective and less discriminatory than stop-and-search. I also prefer dogs than being "frisked" by a prat.

The club have to pay for police presence on matchday. When pubs get drug raided it’s normally on tip offs rather than the landlord who could lose their license.

acknowledging the issue is the first step.

Middlesbrough FC's Head of Supporter Services, Yvonne Ferguson said "As a club we are always striving to engage with our fans across all spectrums. We recognise that different fan groups have different needs and opinions. The first Forum brought together a wide range of supporter groups and we were able to have constructive conversations regarding a number of different topics."

To be fair Gene, the stewards I’ve seen patrolling the Riverside are totally ineffective, I doubt any have had any training in personal safety/ managing difficult individuals. God knows what would happen if it started big time in the stadium. I accept they don’t get paid enough to deal with higher level interventions, but if you’re allocated a job to do, you do it as best you can or don’t do it at all. Stewarding big events entail more than just wearing a high vis jacket

I last went to an away game about 6 years ago and it was an atrocious experience, a group of thugs in front of us were absolutely blotto and spent the shouting abuse at anyone and everyone. it sounds like it has got worse since.

I’m amazed some people have said these issues are since the lockdown. It’s been going on for as long as I can remember.

I haven’t been to an away game since the lockdown but if things have got worse since then then I dread to think what it’s like.

I wouldn’t take youngsters to away games which is a sad reflection on our society.

I remember when we had big away followings and I was going. It sounded great but I knew you’d see a lot more scum.

You would think that in this day and age these people who act like morons especially at away games could be identified and their season tickets revoked and if they’ve been given a ticket via a season ticket holder, trace the ticket sale back to whoever and revoke their season ticket. I enjoy away games, the atmosphere and banter is generally first class but does get tarnished by the di##heads who go to get high and pi$$ed. What makes me laugh though is most of them wouldn’t say boo to a goose when sober!!
