Middlesbrough on a night time

I left Boro back in Jan 1990 and have been back periodically ever since. I live in Northumberland now, but like others have said, it isn't the place I grew up in. Less shops, less police, areas seem to be run down a little bit more. I was having a similar conversation the other day with a mate of a similar age (i'm 49 and hes 50 and from Leeds) and we agree a few things have changed. As a young un, you knew there would be occasions when you'd get into some bother with d***heads, but it was pretty much always fisticuffs and a bit of posturing. Nowadays, social media has driven all kinds of hatred, arguments and whats amplified this rage is the carrying of knives and other weapons. Used to be sort of an "unwritten rule" if you had a scrap and the other person was either on the floor or not fighting back anymore, that was it. Sadly, the norm now is to attempt to put that other person out of commission for good.

The other thing we both agreed on was mobile phones, the internet and social media have been, in equal measures, the best and worst inventions of our lifetimes. Also, everyone wants things NOW, not next week...must be immediate. I miss the days when you waited for stuff, looked forward to a new album coming out, bought it, read the inlay card etc....it was an experience. Now its buy now, sod the consequences, hence so many are in debt keeping up with the Jones'. It's usually younger people influenced by SM and trying to emulate that lifestyle. Might not be the popular view, but I'm just being honest. I still have my manners and I'm polite. I also dunno where those things have gone in modern society either!

My mate got attacked in the town centre on a night out only a week ago

I know it isn’t comfortable to talk about , but I think there is a decent bit of racial tension in the town centre too

I walked through the town centre on Friday for the first time in a couple of years and was surprised by how downtrodden a lot of people seemed to look. Then there's a number of cash exchange shops which have replaced retail shops. It's pretty grim to be honest but I imagine Stockton and Redcar are the same. There's definitely a growing underclass in the teesside area but thats what years of tory rule brings.

No shops to shop in now mate.
That's nonsense. Compared to some towns Middlesbrough has a thriving Town Centre. I guess unless you live and travel elsewhere you don't realise what you have. In Boro you have all the shops you need. It's much better than York which is now just bars and coffee shops.

Is this for real when where you last there ? Half the shops in Boro are closed now York is still thriving.

I live in York . The city centre of York is lovely . Boros is horrible in my opinion , and it’s getting worse

I grew up in boro and over time it’s been getting worse

If people want a decent night and not have the hassle of boro then yarm is the place to go in my opinion.

Most of my mates have been assaulted at some point in boro centre on a night out

There is good and bad everywhere u go .Boro is getting worse but are lovely areas about ,the town centre I avoid when I can but you get that in alot of big towns and cities I've lived away for 14 years from the area and have noticed that.

Going back to say late 80s/early 90s when you'd do the Madhouse, Whickers World, the welly, cornerhouse, the bank, maybes the Arena for live music and then being in the town centre a few weeks ago on a sat night...no comparison. Maybe it's just a generational thing perhaps?

I do travel elsewhere. ATM I'm in Huddersfield and been all over the country and Scotland just in last 12 months. The lack of shops in Boro is there for all to see. Just go and have a look.

Played a gig in Newcastle centre last night, that’s far worse than Boro for getting hassled.

I’m afraid York isn’t thriving (For shops at least)
It’s tough for retailers, high rates, rent are forcing some national chains to abandon ship

Middlesbrough, Stockton, Billingham, Redcar. All much of a muchness in terms of shops, nightlife and scrotes but Middlesbrough seems to be the place that’s always mentioned in these kinds of threads.

Pretty much all towns and cities in UK has its antisocial issues and thugs looking for trouble after a couple of Breezers.

Over a decade of a government responsible for a huge increase in poverty along with huge cuts in public spending, hardly a surprise towns and cities are becoming worse places to live, expect things to get much worse too

That comment was a wild ride! Would never have guessed where it ended up given how it started. Many twists and turns. Bravo!
