Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald said: “We cannot live on a diet of repeated Tory broken promises. In manifesto after manifesto, the Tories pledged to deliver HS2 in full.“Nobody looking at the last 13 years of Tory misrule will believe that by scrapping HS2 and coming up with a new badge for northern transport schemes, the Tories have any real intention or the ability to deliver any of it.

“With the eastern leg already having been cut and now the western arm to Manchester going the same way, we’re left with “HS One and a Quarter” with just a lollipop stick between London and Birmingham.

“The alternative package for the north announced by Sunak is just hog wash.

“There’s no way on God’s earth after 13 years of failure that they have any intention or ability to deliver on any of this. This is a pathetic attempt to assuage the north ahead of a general election.

“The Conservatives should be in no doubt that the people of the North and the entire country have made their mind up on them and will have their say and they will be saying “get out”.

Andy McDonald MP was the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport from 2016 to 2020.

Love to know which politician profited either directly or indirectly from HS2, there should be an independent inquiry into the gross mismanagement of it. My mate works at HS2 he said we've got another 10 years at least before it's built and it's already at £98ish billion.

Summed it up quite well to be fair.

Maglev is the way to go - cost effective and with a much smaller footprint than steel wheels on steel rail;

If HS2 had been fully finished it would potentially do more harm than good to Teesside. It would have strengthed the "M62 corridor" as an investment pull. We already live in a no man's land between Leeds and Newcastle and HS2 would have just made that worse.
Should never have been started in my opinion.

I don’t understand why any Tory or Labour government would continuously ignore the potential of the north and Scotland. Surely the biggest potential impact on GDP and future election results is in bringing infrastructure in places like the north east up to the standard of the south.

Correction for Benjamin Butthead:

"I look forward to fast tracking a good percentage of that money into mine, and my friends bank accounts"

It will be interesting to see what the new Labour Government do for the North East. The red wall seems to be red again, albeit that appears to be based on wide-scale tory foot-shooting and gross incompetence rather than any 'specific' Labour commitments. The ABT philosophy is definitely alive and kicking amongst voters. Now would be a great time to hear the plans for Teesside from Labour and perhaps more specifically Andy Macdonald, assuming he will be paying a prominent role in the next Government. I know how passionately anti-tory he is but Labours time is just around the corner and I would like to hear more of what we can look forward to, other than no more Houchen, Clarke and Co.

heres the govt map for the fable of Network North - as you can see theres not a lot in the 'Teesside' area for RIS's

How do they have the balls to put "Network North" on that map.

Most of it is Leeds to Birmingham, which is effectively the midlands of England (not UK), the vast majority of the other smaller schemes are in the south.

In the North East there's 5 schemes, out of 70, about 7%, next to nothing in the actual North West or Scotland.

There's 20 schemes on the south coast alone FFS.

is the money earmarked for Crabby Ben just there to change the headlines about investment - as this scheme appears to be haemorrhaging tax payers money into the accounts of privateers;

£930M - can he be trusted with that

what area is he calling 'teesside'? - he dont mention Middlesbrough, but he says Arsenal !! 😇

The £978m of new money is also factually incorrect, as most of that money was already allocated from the spring budget. The scrapping of HS2 has added £361m (if it is actually forthcoming).

The actual fact he is rubbishing HS2, when the project has been going on for the last 13 years while his party is in power and have spent tens of billions of pounds on it, without any sense of irony is astonishing. But not surprising.
