Cycling lane improvements coming to conclusion

Works to create a dedicated cycling lane on a main Middlesbrough thoroughfare are coming to a completion.

Middlesbrough Council is now advising motorists of a series of overnight road closures to complete the Linthorpe Road works.

It is anticipated that the improvements will take place overnight for six weeks from the beginning of August from 7pm-6am between Borough Road and Ayresome Street.

The works aim to create a quick and safe cycle route into the heart of Middlesbrough.

The new route will eventually run from the town centre along Linthorpe Road and on to Acklam and link into sections of the Tees Valley cycling and walking network that have recently been delivered, which provide onward links to Thornaby and Stockton.

The improvements have been funded from the Department for Transport and from TVCA’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Phase 1 of the scheme will link Borough Road to Ayresome Street through a mix of protected space for cycling on the highway, and improved road crossings for cyclists and pedestrians and is expected to be completed in September this year.

This scheme will help to:
• Improve safety
• Create a more pedestrian-friendly route
• Support the local economy
• Improve accessibility to local retail, leisure, and services
• Reduce congestion, improving air quality and the local environment
• Improve the public realm
• Improve public health by reducing pollution
• Create an environment where people can travel actively
• Show a commitment to the government's aim of significantly increasing cycling levels

as a cyclist, I cant imagine somewhere I would like to cycle to less. I'm all for cycle improvements but down linthorpe road just seems barmy
I suppose it's for commuters, not so much Sunday afternoon sportive's.

If it encourages people away from driving, then fair enough, and will probably make people fitter/ healthier.

I wouldn't cycle down that road, it's a death trap and bad enough driving down there, and I've been cycling on roads for years. There's zero chance of getting 10% of people commuting down there, if they don't make some changes.

It might even make that area a bit "nicer", or almost ok.

Hopefully it doesn't get full of glass and crap from the takeaways, or at least something gets scheduled to clean it on a Sunday, ready for the week ahead.

Complete waste of time and made the road more dangerous for everyone rather than safer for cyclists.

The M1 could have been built quicker than MBC have taken with this project.
The "danger" along that road is from motorists who park on the pavement, expect everyone to get out of their way and clog up what was once a pleasant, busy road - even in the 70`s and 80s(y)

I was wiped out on my bike at the St Barnabas Road/Linthorpe Road junction., it was 30 years ago and a match day with police everywhere, I got a new front tire from the guy who did it, I still suffer from a bad knee because of it and loads of people witnessed me going flying over his bonnet. I hate that road on a bike and haven't been down it since. Should have taken him to court, but it wasn't something you did back then :D

Walked to Efe's for a meal before the Rotherham game and it was the first time I'd seen Linthorpe road for a long time after moving away. I'd love to know what whoever designed that road layout was smoking at the time. They've somehow made the road worse for absolutely everyone.

Not sure why they need those markers as they dont have them on most cycle paths. If they are determined to keep the why not just turn them around 180 degrees so they encroach it the road and not the cycle lane.

The only benefit is that the druggy beggar's takings will be well down.

If Middlesbrough Council were so convinced of the benefits of the system and wanted to encourage cyclists they should have stuck to their guns and done the full length of Linthorpe Road rather than this half baked bits system of bits here and there.

There's no need for these markers and the bits of road that stick out are dangerous.

The traffic lights at the junction of Linthorpe Road and Southfield Road are idiotic. Buses travelling into town have to pull out into the middle of the road at the junction before they stop and buses pulling out from Southfield Rd turning right have hardly any room to get past the stopped buses.

The whole scheme is half baked.

Maybe because she was drunk and wandering about 🤷‍♂️
you see it all the time, often get a taxi back from the town people just seem to wander into the road obvious long before the cycle lane.
i have done it myself in the past, but that spot is really 10 yards from a proper crossing

I've driven down there since the changes and have seen 2 people on bikes and 2 on scooters, all in the pavement. Then yesterday a police car had trouble getting by the 2 lanes of cars. It is bonkers and shouldn't of ever happened. Plus is looks a total mess. I frigging hate all of the signage on roads now.

I've recently been doing a lot more cycling on the road after moving jobs. From one end of the village to the other.

Definitely reassessed how I drive near and around cyclists on the road now, it's crazy how angry some people get when your cycling on the road.

That said cycling around Middlesbrough doesn't sound like my idea of a good time. Taxi drivers who fly around the place like its Jakarta, Uber eats drivers whizzing Luke warm boxes of mcnuggets to hungover students and 18 year olds with whizz and pop engine maps on their mummy's Ford Fiesta revving about trying to impress 15 year old girls.

They are doing the full length and it was already like this for the bus stops.
