Middlesbrough announced as Investment Zone - Great News👍

Ah, the old charter cities approach - completely strip away all workers rights, regulations and taxation in return for perceived investment. A really dangerous path.

Haven't seen the other areas proposed but wouldn't surprise me if other "red wall" areas are on the list. Reward for their vote is getting shafted under the illusion of progress.

Hartlepool is another one...👍

You seem to have managed to change good news for the area into bad news 😞
Give me strength 😡

What investment has actually been proposed, what do all those words actually mean for the people of Middlesbrough and Hartlepool?

This is just the same as the Health Secretary propsing bringing down GP waiting times by adding more landlines.

Liberalise planning and release land?

There’s not a patch of free land between Middlesbrough town centre and guisborough road.

This council generally make the wrong decision the majority of the time hence no by pass, building on swans corner and more recently the abortion that is linthorpe road. Gresham looks like post war middlesbrough whilst the bulldoze flats lane natural area to build houses (which by this time next year will put the majority of buyers into negative equity)

When is the snow dome starting and how many restaurants do we have around the recently built football stadium?

They allowed large shops to be built that stood empty for years and still have no idea what to do with centre north east and its 9million sq ft floor space

I wouldn’t trust the council to fry an egg Nevermind be trusted to make sensible decisions and spend money wisely

Well at least you have fallen for it Nobby. I am sure many others will - this is exactly what the Tories want with these vague announcements full of false promises.

We've had these promises for 12 years now and nothing has changed. One would hope people would have stopped believing them by now.

What about the land over the border ?
It's an investment Zone for industry and businesses not for housing 👍

What workers rights have been stripped?

What workers rights have been stripped?
New laws on Trade Unions having to offer certain services during strikes and having to ballot on pay offers. Employers no longer have to supply information the 'self employed' are really self employed - i.e. no more pension contributions or paid holiday for gig economy workers.

Retained EU laws will be subject to sunset clauses by end of 2023 - meaning that working time directives and other EU workers rights will be scrapped unless legislation is written otherwise.

That's not in the investment zone area. Also good thing that this will be market led and not by the council, who don't have a clue.

But specifically related to these investment zones?

Well despite all the bluster on here, anything that's going to make it more attractive for businesses to locate here has to be a good thing 👍

Let's Turbocharge our economy guys 👍

Existing local companies will just move to these zones. Companies where I work are considering moving about half a mile over the road. The landlord will charge slightly higher rent the companies will save business rates, national insurance and tax. No jobs will be created. The landlord and companies will just pocket a bit more cash while the country loses out.

But it will be seen as a win by the Gazette and others who can't see or don't care about the bigger picture.
