Mick Kennedy

Loved Mick Kennedy, loved his aggression, his style, he was a great addition to the mighty Boro when Bobby Murdoch signed him from Huddersfield Town for £100k in August 1982

4 days after signing he made his Boro debut away to Sheff Weds, wearing the No10 shirt he was registered No543, he went on to make 79 appearences, scoring 5 goals, his last goals, a brace in a 3-2 home defeat to Derby Couunty were scored on his 22nd birthday, the same day Kevin Beattie made his 5th & final Boro appearence

1872? Hahahaha! I knew I was old and I remember him really well, but I didn’t realise I was that old.

Recall him vividly as a player in a struggling side. The penultimate game was an away game at Brighton a few weeks after Allison had been sacked and Jack Charlton had come back to manage us to survival. Once survival was assured we played out two of the dullest games I ever saw. The 3-0 defeat at Brighton and a dreary 0-0 season ending draw at home to Huddersfield. That was Mick’s last appearance. Hard man yes and fans liked him for that but he was limited. A favourite name in the game Culverhouse.

When I started working in London in late 1989 I had a room during the week, returning home at weekends. Life could get pretty boring so I'd often find a game to go to in midweek - anyone who happened to be playing. One of the early ones I went to was Charlton v Luton at Selhurst Park. Mick Kennedy was playing for Luton and he didn't disappoint. He was sent off.

Forgive the morbid question (he was a bit before my time). He died young, did the drink get the better him?

(I mean no offence in the question)

I only asked as when I Googled him, it mentioned that Pompey made him a Hall of Fame player (or words similar to that) a few years ago. But although that 'made him the happiest person alive', a local Pompey paper reported that 'he was unable to attend the ceremony due to alcohol-related issues'. ☹️

Take care every one.
Never hward the reason for Micks passing

I’ve a MK story I’ve mentioned on here before so please bear with me if you remember it.
Just left school in Summer 83 and Boro were skint. Club appealed to fans to volunteer to paint the seats and barriers at AP so at a loose end before starting my apprenticeship in September me and a few friends did so. Preseason, the players and managers (Malcolm Allison) were coming and going. We hit on the idea of a match, painters v first team and pitched it to MA who agreed,
A couple of weeks later we lined up, jumpers for goalposts, on a pitch on Hall Drive.
About an hour in we were getting tonked about 10-0 when Kelham O’Hanlon went to throw the ball to Gary Hamilton which I spotted and block tackled him as he received the ball which rebounded to my mate who half volleyed it in. Scenes. As I returned to half way line, I passed MK who punched me in the guts full force. Big Mal seen this and bo***xed him. I was playing right wing and he put MK at LFB and encouraged me to take him on every time I got the ball. We got beat 21-1 but that shows MK “winning attitude” to a tee 😂

Mick was (like Dean Glover) was a destroyer but didnt really know any limits and his end ball was iffy... great to watch and very entertaining (for the wrong reasons) Other destroyers we had (George Smith / Greame Souness) could make telling passers after winning the ball back
