Mick Kennedy Remembered - Tackle This

Right Player Wrong Time - maybe sums up the short Boro career of Mick Kennedy. Arriving from Huddersfield as Boro were on a slide towards liquidation in the early 80s Mick's terrier like performances endeared him to the Boro fans. Kennedy went on to play for a host of clubs (he had ten in all in his career) becoming a legend and Hall of Famer at Pompey and playing international football for Republic of Ireland.
He tragically died alone in Ireland in 2019 but was not forgotten his funeral was crowdfunded and there were minute's silences/applause at many of his clubs.
There is a great biography now that remembers the former football hardman and a real 100%'er - someone that plied his trade before the riches of the Premier age but was revered by his fans and fellow players alike - apart from those he kicked.

Mick Kennedy biography review
Good wirite up Rob. Might get this.

My brother in law runs the Pompey legends and was a party to Mick becoming a member of the hall of fame. Mick's family contacted him after his untimely death and asked him to be a pallberer, a position he readily accepted.
Mick sometimes came to the muni golf club quiz, after 1 round, while waiting for answers i went downstairs to the ablutions, and here's Mick on the payphone getting answers. We just had a wry smile at each other. Let him have the point otherwise he might have kicked me.
Loved him as a Boro player in bad times.

A little before my time but have rwad about him at pompey and the high regard he is held in down There and deservedly so by sound of it. Think he died quite suddenly as i read an interview with him not long before he died where he was making future plans. Did he live out west ireland - donegal?

Had his demons bless him, but a great midfielder - some of the steel we are missing now maybe?

Ha yes, I remeber an article a while back of David Ellery refereeing the Leeds v Chelsea cup final replay - think he gave out 10 reds and 22 yellows or something.

On the day there was 1 yellow.

If I recall right .he was sent off on his debut at Hillsborough first game of the 1982.83. season. There was a half hearted attempt at a pitch invasion but south Yorkshire police brutally stamped that out.
I can remember an ex Blackburn player telling me mick punched him off the ball as they were lining up for a goal kick just because he could .
Wholehearted but a bit wild was mick

Helped us stay up in 1983 and finish mid table with a small limited squad in 1984.

In 1984 him and Eine Otto were effective with Hamilton it was not a bad midfield on a show string, but once we got a injury or suspension there was no cover.
