Quick turnaround from last night[v Hull]. How were the boys this morning?

The boys are OK considering. I think positive in many ways from what I said about what we went into the game trying to do, and how I feel like we had done that for the large majority of the game, so we took a lot from that. Physically it was a good game, a tough game: the boys worked really hard and give what they had, so naturally there`s the recovery day today and freshening up ready for the weekend.

Quick turnaround can be good but your options are limited?

[Assertively] You know, it is what it is. The way the boys live their lives and look after themselves and in the condition that they are – playing games as we are, I think its certainly doable, so long as we do the right things between games to rest and recover. The boys are used to it effectively. Of course, we`de prefer to have a full squad to chose from in terms of mixing it around and adapting and being flexible from game to game. But, really it comes down to the lads. The lads are fine playing every two or three days, that`s no problem at all.

What does Carrick think of Swansea?

They`re a good team. Its been a funny week in some ways of playing Ipswich, Hull, Swansea. [All] very similar to ourselves in terms of principles and style of play really, so we`ve ended up finding ourselves watching a lot of each others games this week. Yeah, they`re a good team, obviously you know…….they can have really good spells and get some really good results and be really dangerous at times. So we need…..and I kind of know the….Managing situation for what it is…...can sometimes help, can sometimes hinder. We`ve seen that [impact] vary really in that situation. I think all we can do is prepare for the best version of them, like we will do and expect that. We`ll be ready to be at our best as well.

Does Carrick focus on the Manager situation at Swansea and the impact it might have on their team?

Not particularly! No! I think we are always aware of what they have done, what they could possibly do, you never know 100%. Its always a little bit of calculated guessing game in that respect and….we`ll assess it, make the best of it and for certain, we`ve got to expect them to be at their best. That`s what we`ll do…..you know [they`ll] be another good challenge for us. Another chance to put in a good performance and get a good result.

Injuries and availability of players who played last night. Have they all come through it?

Seems like it. Its still fresh, still early [morning], but nothing major to report, which is positive [smile]...the more we can keep the better.

Riley McGree?

He`s a little bit further [down the line]. He`s gonna start training with us pretty soon Riley, but he`s been out for a period of time now as well, so….its the right balance with the injured boys in terms of we`d love them back as soon as possible, but in reality its a long season. We`ve got to look after that for a period of time and we need to get them back when they`re ready to come back. As much as we are pushing, we`re doing absolutely everything to get them back. We got to be sensible and we`ve got to be balanced with our views on that. I`m hopeful. I`m hopeful to get one or two back over the next week or two. we`ll just have to see how it goes.

Marcus Forss?

He`s a little bit further [behind recovery] so he`ll be a little bit further than Riley.

Josh Coburn?

He`s been feeling….i`ve said hes been feeling [his injury] for a while, over a period of time and its another one where, I suppose we got a duty….but actually he`s a younger player, played a lot of football and we`ve got to be careful you know. We`ve got to look after him. He`s had a little problem with his groin and pelvis, so we got to manage that and hopefully we get him back pretty soon.

It would be nice to have more options in games wouldnt it?

Of course it would be `nice` because the boys are good players [looks straight at reporter] you know. Having said that the boys that are in the squad….they are good players as well and I`ve said that. That`s the difficulty when talking about the injured players: it almost feels like `oh the injured players are missing so its kind of your weakened team` [!] But, for me its certainly not the weakened team [looks straight at the reporter] or weakened individuals. Its more of the chopping and changing really that has effected us a little bit more, in terms of finding our rhythm and connections…..that I`ve spoken about in the last couple of weeks, so individually, we`re good and collectively as a team...we`re good. [Our] options in terms of variety, that`s limited a little bit, but [we`ll] certainly make the best of it as I keep telling you.

How good is it to see the U21`s doing so well as they are?

[Sits up and looks really positive] Its really good. I think its…..for every kind of little set-back or a bit of negativity in terms of missing players through injury. Or suspension or whatever…..there`s always the positive side and every cloud [has a silver lining]….of a young player getting the opportunity: whether that training, whether its being on the bench, whether its just travelling with a group and getting the experience. Its that next step for those boys and…..as part of it that I really enjoy seeing them go through that. Of course we want to try and get them on the pitch over a period of time. But, the experience some of the boys are getting now that they might not have got, will certainly help them and benefit them….whether its soon, because it soon escalates [smiles at reporter] and they get another chance, or whether its maybe a little bit further down the line….Again, that`s exactly why they`re here and that`s exactly what the club`s built for, to give the younger players the chance.

What is Carrick looking for in young players training with the squad?

There`s a lot. Your natural eye tells you an awful lot and how they fit in, how they settle, sometimes it can be the comfort in terms of...do they look like they can play and be part of the First Team group [?] in terms of personality and character...and taking on that expectation a little bit. We`ve had a good training session this morning with quite a number of the younger players. Its great to see and its great for them to train with the squad and see what the standard is really. So, of course, listen. Talent is a big thing: you got to be able to cope for sure [laughs], but as well as that its the attitude and how you behave and look after yourself around the group is very important as well.

Is it easy to judge when a young player is `ready`?

I don’t think its particularly easy or not[!] Sometimes you can have a player who looks [and I`m not speaking about players now]...in general I`ve seen it [where] younger players who are coming through the system and everyone thinks `that`s the next best player who`s going to be in the first team`….sometimes until you actually get that chance to train with the First Team or make that step, and actually get on the pitch, in terms of how you handle it. The talents fantastic, [the] ability...is fantastic to have, but you got to be able to handle it and you got to be able to cope when you`re in that situation. So sometimes you never really know…..and it can be the other way….the [players] you`re not sure about or you don’t really think [they are ready]…...soonly they get the opportunity for whatever reason and then `boom`[!] They kind of take it on and jump to the next level, so that`s part of the challenge of us to judge that and pick who`s ready at what stage and …….can they make the next step [?] To be fair to them as well, because they need to be ready. We cant put them in before that because that would`nt do them justice as well. That`s part of the challenge [smile].

I know you don’t look at the league tables [?!] but, is it positive you are still in touch with where you want to be?

Of course. I`m realistic. I understand where we are and I don’t particularly look at the League Table every day or every other day particularly [looks at reporter and smiles] But I think we know where we are…..the biggest thing for me is what we expect of ourselves and the standards we`ve set, so if we don’t quite hit them for whatever reason…...then we get a little bit frustrated, we get disappointed, but then actually we get five of us in to then think `come on lets do something about it`. I`m realistic, I understand that. There`s plenty of work to do [of course there is], but its all to play for you know. However many points at this stage we have] history proves that its what happens next and over Christmas and after Christmas. That shapes your season really. That`s what`s in front of us. Our period of time now over the next few games [is] to push for that, to get more points …..and then after Christmas...push on again and see where that takes us.

Good runs help in this league..

[interupt`s reporter and smiles] Its nice if they come along.

Boro had a six game streak earlier on and it shows the squad is capable of doing that?

For sure. That`s the belief we take [!] in performances and within games really. Some of the results we`ve had...[we`ve left] thinking `how`s that happened`. Funny enough, some of our wins have come from performances where we might be frustrated with the performance, but everyone tells us how well we`ve played and what a great game…….and I`m going home thinking `actually it was`nt as good as some we`ve played`. There`s always the balance between performances and results, but ultimately, in the end, points is important….but I think you got to have a level of performance to be able to sustain the points over a full season. [smiles] Yeah! We are all striving for that run of wins. Of course, if you do get it, you get up the table and that`s what we`re looking to do.
