This morning, a chilly winter's morning in Middlesbrough, I began a 5km a day challenge in support of the Michael Carrick Foundation December appeal. Everyone signing up has to complete 5km a day exercise through December, so parkruns on Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and New Year's Day will come in handy here.
The idea is to raise money for disadvantaged kids in the north east and Manchester.

First week down. A few skitey bits out this morning. Hope that is not a sign of things to come.
Anyone else following this challenge? I know Mark Motley from Middlesbrough Fans Forum is challenging himself.
I will try and get some information about the work of Michael Carrick Foundation - I know there will be an announcement next year about work being done jointly with the MFC Foundation, which is great news.
Anyway, if you are on the December challenge yourself, do let us know and keep on keeping on. A week gone now.

Message today from Michael Carrick
Our goal is to provide disadvantaged young people with empowering opportunities delivered in spaces where they feel safe, valued and inspired to achieve their full potential.

Our sessions are extremely well attended, both in Greater Manchester and the Northeast, with hundreds of youngsters accessing programmes every single week.

Each one of our participants attends for a different reason. For some it’s to improve their skills, for others it’s to meet new friends, and for a few it’s because they have no where else to go and our coaches are not only their role models, but safe people in which they can confide and get help from.

For lot of our young people, if they weren’t coming along to sessions, they’d be wandering the streets and through no fault of their own likely mixing with the wrong crowd - Did you know that when our sessions are delivered in Byker anti-social behaviour falls by 25%!

Now in our fifth year, our sessions are starting to become oversubscribed and rather than turning anyone away, we’re desperately trying to raise funds to deliver an additional hour at each of our sites.

If every person doing the 5k-a-Day Challenge raised £100, this would enable us to add an additional hour at one of our sites for a whole year!

For anyone currently doing the 5k a day challenge we have made it to the shortest day of the year and finally overcome that ridiculously cold, icy fortnight.
Keep on keeping on.
Good luck to everyone - keep on challenging yourself through the festive period.
