A couple of delays for injury interrupted the flow of the game, and Boro came back into the contest courtesy of Oliver Samuels with Will Partland claiming the assist.
Matthews went close to firing Boro ahead either side of half-time, and he was presented with another opportunity when Frankie Coulson was fouled by Alfie Cresswell and a penalty was awarded. The forward made no mistake in putting Boro 2-1 up.
Cresswell swiftly received a second yellow card to reduced Leeds to 10, but the home side were level with 20 minutes remaining when Max McFadden scored.
Charlie Lennon and Law McCabe both had chances to restore Boro's lead, and Lennon played his part when Matthews headed home a corner with just five minutes left.
And McCabe claimed the assist when Boro put the game beyond doubt, the goal coming courtesy of Eric Hamelberg in stoppage time.
