Messi, Ronaldo are two big players that are showing what should be done

And no doubt others that want to remain anonymous will be doing likewise
But when the news show the Tottenhams, Newcastle of this world sending out the wrong message when we keep talking about togetherness it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth

Football plays a massive part in our lives & seeing things done the right way goes a long way in these difficult times

Klop has done stuff for Catalonia I believe. Plus the new owner of UD Almería made a big donation to the province here recently.

They could live off what they earn in a week for the rest of their lives, so I don't think it's too much of a sacrifice.

Messi's on 30% of his weekly wage, but he's usually earning £1m a week.

Yes I understand that, even if he never receives another salary he'll have enough to live on but the point of my thread is he's offered & maybe by doing so is keeping people in a job, a job they possibly love, which keeps their mind active, losing a job & what's going on could cause further issues with them

When I've been thinking about football during this break the main thing I go back to is the absolutely rediculous amounts of money. Its obscene really. Theres not a man on this planet should be paid so much to do a sport. Not saving lives, not inventing things to help mankind, not finding cure for cancer. For kicking a ball around for entertainment.
They should get the government packages on wages or paid by the club. If the club can't pay then tough. They're businesses at the end of the day.

And when I say that I don't want footballers to lose their jobs. I just hope government don't get asked for help. I expect they'll have to agree to a percentage cut. Deferals will only put clubs out of business 3 or 4 months after the first ball is kicked.

Coukdnt agree more

I despise this way of thinking. People chip in and get abuse or disregarded because they have money.

It's horrible, when someone is doing a good deed, to belittle it.

Some people just enjoy being negative. If Messi had personally discovered and mass manufactured a vaccine I imagine he'd still get grief.
I can't remember who said this but a quote from a footballer about being criticised all the time : "if I'd have walked on water, they would have criticised me for not being able to swim"

I actually think it's pretty disgusting that we haven't had a statement from the PFA stating that all of the elite pros will forgoe their wages for the duration.

Where's the abuse?

It's a fact that it likely won't be too much of an issue for multi-millionaires to forsake part of their huge wages for a few months.

All professional footballers in the leagues of Europe should be doing the same as the Barcelona and Juventus, or plenty of clubs will be in grave financial trouble.
Not every club has the financial clout or stability to take the hit, and the fact that a club as huge as Barcelona are doing it says it all. I imagine we're in trouble.

I'm a big fan of Messi, but there was enormous public pressure on the players to forsake their wages and criticism was mounting greatly before they finally announced it.
It wasn't a spur of the moment gesture.

Gary Lineker is donating 2 months salary to the British Red Cross, fair play, he's a fairly high earner himself so that'll be a sizeable donation.

i said abuse or disregarded. Yours was the latter.

I imagine if he ever saw a comment like yours he'd probably think. "OK pal, I won't bother next time"

Petty to complain about someone giving money to a good cause.

Ben if it's not good enough why don't you top the fund up from your pay?

Where have I complained or said it's not good enough from him?
Get off your high horses.

I'm sure he's aware himself that he's set for life and won't be troubled by this.
Me pointing that out won't change anything.

But it is ridiculous that it's even come to a situation where working class staff aren't able to get their pay until clubs are able to convince players to stop receiving tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds a week for doing nothing.
