Merson on Soccer Saturday

Just talking about Harry Kane and whether he'll move, and saying he'll have to think about and consult his family.

Which then moved sideways to "I got divorced...I could only see the kids on certain days...I shouldn't have gone to Middles-bor-ough - no disrespect, but it was completely selfish of me to go to Middles-bor-ough".

Oh.

Don’t you think it was regarding his personal situation he made the comment? Certainly I think so. He did well out of us. Handsomely paid, England recall based on the form he showed for us.

And he was a helluva player who really put it in where it mattered- on the pitch.

Oh yeah, that might be the single greatest season by an individual Boro player I've seen. He basically got us promoted.

But it was spoiled by the manner of his leaving. He couldn't just say "I need a move", he had to badmouth the club when he did it.

He practically got us single handedly promoted 😉

I don't think it was a dig. Just using it as an example of things that effect players moving. To be fair he was a recovering alcoholic and we had a boozy culture.

The greatest single season from any Boro player for me. I know it was in the champo and he left under a cloud.

He was pretty much man of the match every week. A pure joy to watch👏

I've never taken his comments about us as a dig. Paid well but for him to put the work in he did for us at a time in his life like that, I have no idea how he did it and I have to respect that.
I share the same thoughts.
We obviously took a chance on him, he repaid us by, like others have said, getting us promoted. I'm happy Merson is still around and still making a living in the game given the addiction problems he's fought over the years.

Look at what it did to Best and Gazza for example.

Didn't he share a place with Gazza for some time while he was here with us .. Jeeez!

Yes he did. I remember a story he shared at a sportsman's dinner many years ago about Gazza launching fireworks around the area the house was 🤣.

Wasn't it Merson who put in a word for Gazza?

Oh.
Yeah once the soft sod had worked out how much of his wedge his wife was getting....

I was going to say that - I seem to remember him saying we didn't help him by putting him in with Gazza.
Sure it's right. I was bored on Jury Service one time so bought a couple of books from Waterstones and one was Merson's .. it was quite a painful read to know some of the stuff that was going on in his head while he was home with nothing to do. Self-harm etc to stop him in his habits ..

As for Gazza, typical of him but funny to read the sh1te he got up to but pairing them both together .. I can't see how Boro staff would've just looked past that at the time without realising that is a recipe for disaster.

Either way, Merson still got us up on his own more or less and will have probably been half-cut still in most games. For someone who knows a lot about both depression and addictive issues, I consider that strength that most in those places can't find and switch on and off like a tap, as he seemed to as soon as he was on a football pitch. I know he was paid ridiculous amounts but no amount of money can change a state of mind that battered overnight to me.

Each to their own. I have never had any problems with the guy and quite proud he wore our shirt to be fair.

I remember he was dog sh.it for the first 3 or 4 months but he did the business in the second half of the season, no doubt.

I remember when he was on that Harry's Hero's thing and he was talking about his addictions, it finally clicked to me why he wasn't happy at Boro. He was struggling and a recovering alcoholic around a club that had a massive drinking culture. It must have been hell inside his head to be honest.
