Mendieta

And Southgate made him play with the kids, unforgivable!
Didnt southgate get in touch with Mendieta later to apologise. People make mistakes at least he accepted that.

Mendieta though, wow! On his day he was absolutely fantastic. At his very best he could slot into the man city team of today. He just seemed to dictate the pace of the game, fabulous touch and a superb eye for a pass. He didn't need pace.

his legs had gone by that point. He was terrible in his last few appearances

I think a lot of people are fixed on the Valencia Mendieta.
He really was a shadow of that player at Middlesbrough - and a pale shadow once he had signed permanently.
When he first came in he wasn't the Valencia version, but he was still good until that injury vs Portsmouth. Then he sort of gradually declined but had a little resurgence around the Man Utd game. I think we changed formation slightly and he played on the right of a midfield 3 and it suited him for a bit

I think a lot of people forget our midfield Bates, Walker, Shawky.. (Bates did ok tbf)
Arca and O’Neil were our stand out midfielders!

Some deep lying Mendieta action could have turned one or two of these results around..

Sunderland - draw at home, loss away
Hull - loss away
West Brom - loss home and away
Newcastle - draw at home, loss away

3 points and 4 goals difference relegated us

Yes, I STILL think Wheater should have been playing upfront! there were occasions where Huth could have done us a job.. (the Euell & Gook Lee years)

You talk about the relegation season and Mendieta being missed.
He left the club in June 2008, having made no appearances for his last full contracted season, 7 the entire prior season and just 31 in the 4 years after we signed him fully.

He couldn't run.

He was a brilliant player at Valencia, absolutely fabulous.
We got him on a free because he was done.

Prior to him playing for us, I always got Mendieta mixed up with Zended. I remember my son correcting me on this and me saying "I wouldn't mind either of them playing for the Boro." Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen.

He reminded me of this when they both made the Boro's starting 11.

Now Zenden really was a fine player for us.

Used to love watching him strike the ball in warm-ups. It looked as effortless as breathing out.
