Mendieta / Nike advert / Berlin

I’m not sure how many folk will be interested in this, but I recently saw a post on fmttm about Mendieta and thought I’d share it.

Many moons ago (2002 WC?) there was a Nike advert where Eric Cantona hosted a footy tournament on a ship.

I was in Berlin at the time and managed to ‘acquire’ some of the posters from lampposts and bus stations over there promoting the ad campaign. I’ve since had them framed 20 years on and have put them on my wall - I’m posting it as one of them has Mendieta on one of them. I thought other Boro fans might like to see them…

The Scorpion KO tournament, aka "The Cage" and yeah, coincided with the 2002 World Cup.

Put JXL's remix of Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" into the mainstream where it got to number one in the charts around the world. Still have my copy, lol

Fun fact: The adverts were directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame.

Mendi was in the first match

Yep that was the one! I remember loving the adverts at the time and the theme tune especially. The matches looked raw and it had a whole ‘underground’ feel to it which I thought was class.

Here’s a few more in my set. I got four in total.

Those are pretty awesome.

It was a real tournament btw, for schoolkids. Only the final stages were actually held inside a cage, though.

Lucky You to have lived in Berlin. Absolutely amazing City. Me and my lad go every year to watch our adopted team Hertha !
Ahh no, I was just there on Holiday visiting at the time. The posters were everywhere and we had great fun climbing lampposts and up walls to get them haha!

I know what you mean about it being a great city though… I lived in Poznań (west Poland) for many years and would regularly fly from Berlin to Newcastle. I’d always have a night or two in Berlin just to try out a few pubs and soak up the atmosphere. It’s got a very unique feel to it and you can still feel the divide between the East and West. Fascinating place.

I was back over in Berlin last week and chatting with one of my old friends from Berlin who goes to Hertha games. As an ex-Union season ticket holder (hehe) I was saying it's nice to see the Olympic Stadium hosting Champion League games again. He said he doesn't mind Union doing well but he said the problem is every time Union play there absolutely plaster the Hertha home end with Union stickers and it's a nightmare trying to get rid of them each time

I didn’t realise it was a real tournament like… That’s class. I do remember the adverts progressed over time so you saw the scoreboards updating and teams getting knocked out etc.

They were very well put together.

Peak football for me, i'll of been around 13/14 at the time. These adverts plus the Pepsi Galactico ones. Nike had a knack with adverts then what you dont seem to see now, Rooney living in a caravan etc
