Aged 51 looking to get one of those full MOT tests done which they check everything bloods cancer screening etc etc

Nuffield do one around £1,065, has anyone done one or would recommend anywhere ?

Ideally looking for the most comprehensive one

Hmmmm..seems pricy. I think just getting to know a GP regularly is good. I have had the same GP for 12 years and know each other well. I have bloods taken every 6 months and see a few specialists..I am mid 40's but have a few things to monitor and family history of a few things..

I think sitting down with a GP you know and trust is the way to go but this full MOT thing might be good also...each to their own and all that...

I hardly see my doctor and maybe seen her 3 times in last 10 years. My mam once said I had 3 sixes on my head 😂 because I’ve never had anything even measles which is good, but at 51 it makes you think has anything been missed.

We already screen for certain things at certain times. The reason we don't screen en masse for everything else is because the risks outweigh the benefits. There are a lot of false positives and false negatives in screening and that can lead to unnecessary tests, procedures, stress etc which outweighs the positives of correctly finding true positives. Seems like a lot of money for something like that. Getting checks when you have specific concerns via your GP is more appropriate.

It is something that happens in America because they all pay for it and it generates business. The NHS make decisions that are more rational.

I can see your point but then how do you find the true positives in your health

Went to the doctors 6 weeks ago, had blood pressure done and bloods, blood pressure through the roof put on tablets, bloods came back with a few things slightly elevated...liver function being one, I'm on a diet and exercise more (walking 3 mile a day).....PSA I had done 2 years ago as I have family history..came back OK.

I'm drinking less alchol and cut out carbs for now.

Speak to your GP and get a check up.

Being a pensioner my doctor gives me a yearly check up. Originally for hypertension when I was still working.
Well worth the 15 minutes a year if you can get it.

It sounds a lot but you can’t put a price on good health and understanding your body. It is £88 a month. Over the year you probably spend similar on car or meals out or the Boro. I had not gone to the doctors for years then went into hospital due to a back issue and they found a fault with my heart. An MOT would have picked that up easily.

Never seen the same doctor more than twice.
And there guys n’ gals lies the naked truth.
Since our practice was taken over by a group, and 5 local surgeries were amalgamated, there is such a high turnover of Doctors and Locums, it’s a lucky dip who you get to see. Hence, half your ten minute appointment is taken up with them reading your notes, it’s an absolute farce.

Appreciate the advice guys I know it can be a personal subject

That last sentence makes my mind up as you say that would be picked up 👍🏻🙏🏻

If you have high blood pressure based on the reading at your Doctor's try a blood machine at home. Like me you may have 'white coat syndrome '.
Mine appeared elevated, but once I took readings at home it was clearly normal.

I've been doing private blood tests every six months for several years and it led to my low testosterone diagnosis, I could see this in the results as well as noticing the change in my general wellbeing. When I spoke to the GP before starting treatment he said they didn't test for testosterone and offered me counselling for my low mood. The TRT's done wonders for me.

I still do the well man check-ups offered by the GP but i can afford to do more regular in-depth testing myself, and its one less thing for the NHS to do.

I pay for a full blood test online with MdiChecks. Its not cheap but no where near £1k. I go for the full one so its checking everything. Always good just to see what is happening as not every marker that's off has a symptom.

Agree it seems pricey. I was at the doctors a few weeks back, had blood pressure, ECG, full blood count done etc. granted was for an issue but once you are over 40 you can get a free “well man” test done, and which is the same, minus the ECG. Just call your doctors.
