Meanwhile, in Sweden...

As infection rates start to soar again in most countries it's beginning to look like Sweden got it right - apart from the care home situation which every country failed on.

We are not in a pandemic either. It’s only the government and media eu say we are.
if you actually look at the more hospital admissions and weekly respiratory/covid deaths they are exactly where you would expect them to be for this time of year.

My local city hospital in Skelleftea has just closed its Covid ward. There has been a rise in community infections (a couple of big University and college campuses) in the county, but it doesn't seem to be resulting in too many hospitalisations as yet,

From what I can gather, there is a rise in cases across the country, but seemingly concentrated in areas where students have gone back to university. Stockholm's water analysis shows an increase in infections in the city that mirrors the growth in positive tests. This was anticipated by the PHA in Sweden ... both a seasonal rise and one associated with schools/colleges/universities resuming normal business. There has been a small increase in hospitalisations ... again, anticipated by the PHA... but it would be alarming if ICU admissions started to soar. They have remained at below 5 per day since July and averaging lower.

We should be looking to follow their lead, not in the approach to Covid19 but to their approach to looking after society as a whole. We're not in a position to cope in the way that they have.

They're all about the collective, so higher taxes, higher benefits and a genuine "we're all in this together" approach .... unlike our laughably phoney "all in this together".

Unfortunately the young ... students ... don't seem to be buying into the collective mantra of looking after each other and behaving in a way that limits spread. Eight counties have outbreaks associated with student parties. There is a also one outbreak in a hospital and several associated with sports teams ... particularly hockey.

Despite all this, no deaths were reported yesterday but there has been a small increase in ICU patients over the last few weeks.

I think it's worth mentioning that not everybody agrees that the Swedish strategy has been a success. See article below from Time magazine, published on October 14th.

The Swedish CoVid-19 response had been a disaster

The basic summary of this piece is:

"Not only did these lack of measures likely result in more infections and deaths, but it didn’t even help the economy: Sweden has fared worse economically than other Nordic countries throughout the pandemic.

The Swedish way has yielded little but death and misery. And, this situation has not been honestly portrayed to the Swedish people or to the rest of the world."

A bit of a harsh summary to be sure but the article goes into some detail as to why the writer comes to this conclusion.
