McNair

Think it’s only right I start a thread praising him after my thread pretty much hammering him after Brighton. Done well when he’s played recently and yesterday was comfortably his all round performance of this season. Should of scored too.

Tough one for Carrick next week. I think our best partnership is Fry and Lenihan but Fry was poor aside from the sending off last week and McNair never put a foot wrong yesterday.

For team morale it may be best to stick with Paddy.

What do you think?

He did really well apart from the odd slip up. I think he needs Lenihan with him and to be on the right though to look 'comfortable' at centre back.

I think our playing out from the back and ball retention under pressure increased yesterday because of his ability on the ball.

I presume from the amount of minutes that Carrick has given Paddy that Fry will be back in though.

McNair on the right of the 2 is far better than when he's on the left.
He's not a good defender and not good enough in midfield.

He didn't have a bad game yesterday but was beaten easily towards the end and the attacker couldn't finish.

He's ok as a stand in for a game or two but that's it. I don't particularly rate Fry either and hope we can bring another centre back in.

He done okay but still noticed him rushing into midfield and then shirking the tackle, one of which led to the white-haired player getting through on goal and he should’ve scored.

Lenihan though, faultless.

Isn’t it nice for us to only have problems for our next game at home to Blackpool, whereby we are bothered about which 2 players will play at centre back and whether Dan Barlaser will start next week ?

Fry has been excellent for the last 6 months, apart from one admittedly poor game against Sunderland. In my opinion that is!

If Fry is considered to be our first choice CH then, yes, he should come back against Blackpool. He missed the Watford game because of suspension. If Fry had been dropped, then McNair would probably keep his place. A nice problem to have!

I think Carrick will probably go with Fry, but to be honest I'd like to see McNair keep his place.

Watford aren't exactly whipping boys, he played well and the whole team played well. His quality on the ball from the back probably played a big part in that.

You don't really want to be chopping and changing your back line too much, but at home and games where we're looking to and expect to dominate possession I'd rather see McNair in. If we're in for more of a battle then Fry is probably better.

Fry was poor v Sunderland, got suspended, McNair came in and performed well. All things being equal he deserves to keep his place until he is poor or makes a mistake and gets suspended or injured. But it's not always that simple of course.

There's also the argument of not changing a winning side. Particularly one that performed so well.
