McNair ----> Stoke City

Really? Didn't think Wing got much of a look in under Warnock. He didn't make a start did he and came off the bench less and less as the matches progressed.
he didn't get a look in because he isn't very good.

Wing is our worst CM, then McNair, Saville is steady enough at this level, but never really shines, Howson is a excellent but his legs will go soon.

Warnock sussed Wing pretty quickly. He barely featured in the final key games. He has no future at the club.

Other than the occasional great goal Wing offers nothing , too slow, does not tackle. does not push forward, would be great at Harrogate Town.
He might survive the cull this summer, mainly because of the perfect storm of the pandemic effects, a major squad overhaul, and our need to get our squad size up quickly. But he won't be a Boro player 12 months from now, absolutely no way. Neil has him sussed as below championship standard. I've been saying it for 18 months, and anyone who watches the game with their coaching head, not fan head on will agree.

He was touted as Man Utds long term successor to Gary Neville at one point.. then he went to Sunderland as a midfielder where he was so highly regarded their fans were screaming blue murder that they'd let him go for the paltry sum of £5m

When he signed for us one Sunderland fan I know said to me "he's like a cut price version of Steven Gerrard, he'll boss the midfield in the champo".

In reality he's looked more like a cut price version of Paul Gerrard (expert diver).

He didn't look fit when he came back from the lockdown

Shows what I know, I thought scoring goals was an important part of the game.
It is, but your average player spends less than 2 1/2 mins in possession of the ball in a game. You have to use that possession right, but you spend 87.5mins+ being in the right position, closing space, delay, deny, deflect and defend, making predictable moves for your teammates, etc. In many ways that is more important. Tarmo Kink had a fantastic shot, Maulary Martin had a a fantastic shot, they were still poor quality players, as is Wing. If he doesn't go in the summer he'll be gone next summer because there are too many holes in his technique and tactical awareness

Fair enough BM, personally I like Wing. Think we're often too quick to write off attacking players on here based on how much (or how little) they contribute to defending.

I think given the same amount of game time Wing will outscore any of our midfielders over a season so for me he's worth having around, even if it means one of the non-scoring midfielders has to pick up extra slack defending.

People generally are, but he's played what 75+ games now over the last 2 seasons, his goals have been vital, but he shouldn't be anywhere near a championship team. He'd be superb for a League Two side and ok in League One. I can't think of a CM less tactically disciplined and aware in the last 30 years

Only Howson has made more tackles in our squad, but at a lower tackles per minute than Wing.
