McGoldrick

They say we can learn lessons from history

Lets go back to 1976 - Big John was sadly finished and we needed a big centre forward to replace him to partner David Mills

Alan Willey and Malcolm Smith were not good enough for the top division. Alan Foggon was not a target man and had been found out.

We nearly signed Ray Hankin from Burnley (£185K) and Willy Pettigrew available from Motherwell for the same. Instead Jack signed Alf Wood for £5k or so from Millwall, a 30 plus bog standard Div 2 (Champ) forward. £185k was like £30m now.

Willy won 2 League cups with Dundee United in 1979 and 1981 and 5 caps for Scotland in 1976/7. He commanded a £120k fee when going to Hearts in 1981. His goal scoring record was very good in Scotland but he never played for the Old Firm or out of Scotland. He probably peaked in 1977. Probably would have been a poor to very average signing, best avoided.

Ray Hankin went to Leeds from Burnley in 1976 and did quite well there but missed quite a few games through injury. Leeds did sell him in 1980 for £300k to Vancover Whitecaps, counting inflation they at least got their money back, He did bring a bit of trouble with him. Went down hill after leaving Leeds. Probably would have been a reasonable signing, but difficult for John Neal to manage.
We also nearly signed Paul Mariner from Plymouth and Lawrie Cunningham from Orient about the same time. So your point is exactly what?
Of course we can spend and sign badly, but we could always spend and sign well too. I thought Scott and Wilder were supposed to be the bollox???

Think this is a really poor signing. If is is as good as some on here think why did Sheff U release him. Never ever rated him. He has only managed 125 goals in over 500 games. The highest he has ever scored in the Championship was 15 although he bettered it by one goal in League 1. I just never understood what he brought to the party.

We’ve had an eye on promotion or promotion through the playoffs. We’ve still got work to flak and these two aren’t even through the door yet. A marked improvement on previous years.

Bamford scored 17 goals in 38 games 2014/15 Impressive!!

11 goals in 39 games In 2017/18

Crooks score 11 for us last season..

16 goals and 6 assists to recover from last season.

McGoldrick scored 4 goals and made 2 assists
Let’s say Gayle doesn’t contribute at all.

We still only have to make up 12 goals and 4 assists!

Joao scored 10 goals and made 3 assists last season over 24 games.

2 goals and 1 assist from a mystery striker and we’re looking pretty good!

and that’s without looking at loaning in from the prem!
Well, you’ve got me enthused. The problem is that kind of optimism doesn’t go down well on Teesside, you’ll risk being ostracised!

A good solid pro, who can play at this level. He will know exactly what is expected of him. Physical and won’t get bullied. Whilst I realise that the object of the game is to score goals, there’s more to McGoldrick’s game than that. He’ll coat nothing, won’t be on ridiculous wages and given the new rules re substitutes will be a useful player to bring on. A definite improvement on our current options and by no means our main striking target this season. I only hope that Spurs don’t mess is around too much and leave us with enough time to put the money towards another striker.

The Sheff Utd fans think he was great when he was fit, they had to let him go because his wages were too high for the lack of games he played.

If we get him for free we could maybe pay him a little bit more but still have a good player for a relative cheap overall package. Sounds like he's a good pro and good dressing room influence.

He won't be first choice he'll be someone we bring off the bench or rotate in to give others a rest

Think he'll surprise a few personally. He's not prolific but his all round game is excellent. If we have more of a natural goalscorer alongside him I think he'll have a big impact. Fitness record is probably the biggest concern, but then he's probably not being brought in to play 90 mins twice a week.

Not all effective strikers are goal machines. Bergkamp's scoring record in England was pretty modest, but I doubt anyone would've been turning their noses up at him.

We paid a million to loan Balogun and some kinda loan fee for Connally.

That's wasting money. This simply isn't. He's free.

Talk of his injury record? Well Gayle is every bit as bad (signing both is another story) . Oh and let's not forget how Watmore and his 'injuries' turned out👍

I imagine he's very much like Watmore in terms of not offered a new deal due to being on big wages and injury prone. I presume any deal we offer him reflects that.

1 in 4 isn’t bad. He is not going to be our star striker, he will come in and add to the paper thin strike force we currently have. He has experience and many of the attributes, including attitude, that Wilder wants from players.

Can’t beat a player being written off before they’ve even signed, let alone kicked a ball.
