I was listening to a conversation with a care worker yesterday. She'd finally been given PPE on Tuesday. She needed to wash it every night at 60degC for the next day. The patients have no masks, something that the East Anglia mask survey acknowledged would benefit aged, vulnerable people, so anyone with the virus would quickly pass it around.

The Doctors and Nurses response. They're not happy.

Don't overuse

Matt Hancock ..." Oh yes you have. But on a completely unrelated topic, can you treat it like a precious resource and reuse it as much as possible. By the way, if anyone's watching who could make this stuff, do let me know".

It’s crazy when we’re focus on a cure for this virus and the financial cost that comes with this whole thing when a simple set of PPE could save so many lives .

It’s up there with striving for a cure for cancer and yet people still smoke

It's not crazy at all.

A less cynical mind may say that the Government is in disarray as they're facing a pandemic that hasn't been seen in at least 100 years (debatable). This government was formed to deliver Brexit not be put on a war footing. My question is two fold. Is there enough PPE to go round EVERYONE from nurses to care home patients to ITU consultants? Or is there a distribution problem in regards to PPE?

It's quite obviously a supply and demand issue

See also toilet rolls, pasta and hand sanitiser

You can't just magic it out of nowhere, it takes time !

True. If only the Government had had some advance warning that the virus was likely to come to the UK. If they had, I’m sure they would have used that time wisely to prepare.

Where exactly are they going to get the masks? Hardly anyone is selling them. China bought up every mask they could find on the planet in January of this year (2.2 billion). China, like Taiwan and just about every other manufacturing country stopped exporting masks. China has been releasing tiny numbers of masks in a PR effort. The truth is they're probably going to need them for the next wave.

I did read that there's even a shortage of the base material for the masks (electrostatic non-woven polypropylene).

I assume they're not telling the truth because they either hope to eventually manufacture masks within the UK, or because they're worried about creating a panic. Either way it's a global problem not just restricted to the UK.

Spot on BR14, there are only a limited number of mask manufacturers and they mainly supply the industrial market. You can't just decide to buy millions of masks at the drop of a hat and expect them just to be sitting in a warehouse somewhere when global demand is unprecedented.

It's just naive to think that...

Or you could have been smart and got in there early before most other countries 🤔
