Match by match report of our 1st ever promotion since joining the football league in 1899

Well our impressive run had to end sometime, somewhere

Our 8 game (6 wins & 2 draws) unbeaten run started & ended against the eventual 2nd divison champions WBA

Losing 2-1 at Linthorpe road on 12th October (our only home defeat of the season) & ending on the 14th December away, losing 2-0

John Robsons team had to pick themselves up & hopefully, fingers crossed, go on another unbeaten run & finish the season in a promotion position

After 15 games our record looked impressive & sent out a message this new team is here to not make up the number but make themselves a force to be reckoned with

Played 15: Won 9, Drew 2, Lost 4, Goals for 33, Goals against 13, Points 20

This day 1901 2nd division - The mighty Boro played their 16th game of the season away to Bristol City, unfortunately losing this fixture 1-0, which was our 5th defeat of the season & our last back to back defeats of the season

1-0 defeat was our penultimate defeat & penultimate away game without scoring an away goal for the remainder of the season

Almost at the half way stage, manager John Robson is putting together a good team, the 2nd half of the season is going to be a cracker

After our last back to back defeats of the (entire) season we face Blackpool at home at the half way mark of our 1st ever promotion season

Our 17th game seen the final fixture of the year & a chance to get back on another winning run

Manager John Robson gave a debut to A.Thompson, registered No57 when he made 2 away appearences the previous season, now the Linthorpe crowd can see what our latest CF is capable off, which was a cracking debut as he scored both goals for the mighty Boro as we ended 1901 with a 2-1 win & back to winning ways

We started the season with 2 wins, one at home & one away, we've now ended the year with a win, in between wasnt too bad either, with Boro recording a 5-0 & 6-0 home wins, with only one defeat at home going into 1902 things looked promising for a team in their 3rd season as a league club

Up to this point our seasons record so far:-
Played 17, Won 10, Drew 2, Lost 5, Goals for 35, Goals against 15, Points 22 (2 points for a win back then)

This day 1902 is the start of the year which finishes in our 1st ever promotion

After 2 back to back defeats we finished 1901 with a 2-1 home win over Blackpool, the new year started with another home game & another home win when we thrashed Burton Albion 5-0

The goals came from
Joe Cassidy scored our 1st NYD hat trick (as mentioned in another thread)
Abraham Jones doubled his Boro goal account for the season
Peter Turner scored his 5th of the campaign

What a 2nd half of the season is to unfold as the mighty Boro mount a successful promotion assault

The 1st game of the start 2nd half of a season that is to end as the mighty Boro win promotion in only our 3rd season as a league club

The 1st time we played on this day as a league club

Opponents Stockport County were simply blown away, our previous game the Boro scored 5, this day the mighty Boro went one better, scoring 6, equalling our highest score of the season so far & extending our consecutive winning run to 3 games, scoring 13, conceding one

John Robsons team are certainly full of goals, it will have to be a well organised team to stop the Boro juggernaught & get something from the Boro this season

Stockport became the 1st team we done the double over that season

Goalscorers:-
Abraham Jones, with his 3rd of the season
Peter Turner scored his 6th of the campaign
William Wardrobe scored his 3rd of the campaign
John Brearly for his 12th of the campaigne
Joe Cassidy for his 8th of the campaigne
David Smith for his 4th of the campaigne

This day 18th Jan 1902

After our previous win over Stockport County by 6 goals to nil at Linthorpe road we again played at home with Glossop our opponents

After losing to Glossop in the away fixture early in the season 1-0 we gained sweet revenge with our 1st win against Glossop with another high scoring game, 5-0 to the mighty Boro

Our last 4 games have seen the Boro score 18 goals, a 2, 5, 6 & now 5, with one reply, since our last & our 2nd back to back defeats of the season we've bounced back in great style winning 4 on the bounce

The following Boro's 5 goals came from:
Dave Wright 5th goal of the season
Abraham Jones, 4th goal of the season
William Wardrobe scored a brace for his 5th of the campaigne
Joe Cassidy for his 9th of the campaigne

John Robsons team are the form team in the 2nd divison & will take some stopping to be promoted to the 1st divison in only our 3rd season in the football league

FAC day, a breather from league action as we embark on what will hopefully be a good FAC run, to go with our excellent league form

Bristol Rovers arrived at our Linthorpe road ground as our opponent's for a 1st round cup match, the Boro will be confident going in to this fixture after winning 4 on the bounce, scoring 18 in the process with a one reply

It was that man again Joe Cassidy who scored our goal, his 10th of the campaigne, in front of 13,000, our 3rd highest FAC home attendance

Unfortunately it wasn't enough on the day Rovers scored an equaliser, taken the game to a replay

29th Janyary our FAC journey ended at the 1st hurdle, after drawing the 1st game 1-1 at Linthorpe road, 4 days earlier, the mighty Boro bowed out at Bristol Rovers 1-0, with promotion from the 2nd division as our main goal

Before our cup exit tge mighty Boro won 4 league games on the bounce scoring 18 goals with one reply, after the cup exit our priority is & has always been, promotion

On this day (1st February) Linthorpe were the visitors to Linthorpe road, a team we lost to earlier in the season 2-1

We failed to score at home for the 1st time that season as Lincoln fought hard to take a point away from the Boro in a game that ended 0-0

Lincoln were the last team that season to take any points from Linthorpe road

After winning 5 on the bounce, 3 in since January we drew our previous fixture 0-0 at home to Lincoln in front of 8,000 fans

Todays visit of Woolwich Arsenal gives the mighty Boro the chance to get back to winning ways & continue their challenge as one of the promotion favourites

Joe Cassidy got the only goal of the game, his 10th of the campaigne, keeping both points on Teesside & a step closer to the top flight

It was our 3rd double of the season

Well the season is drawing closer to the finishing line with the final 12 games of our 1st ever promotion season as we prepeare to travel to Oakwell to face Barnsley

Unbeaten in the league this calander year & since losing at Bristol City 1-0 on the 21st December, yes they also beat us in our promotion season, lucky omen hey, we have played 6 league games, winning 4 on the bounce then drawing the 5th 0-0, we then beat Woolwich Arsenal 1-0 for our 6th unbeaten game, scoring 19 goals in the process, conceding just the one, the week before the Barnsley fixture, who sit in midtable

Boro just brushed aside Barnsley with a 7-2 thrashing, with the following goalscorers

John 'Jack' Brearley bagged 4, the 2nd that has happened in our history, taking his account to 16 for the season
Andrew Davidson doubling his seasons account
William Wardrobe scored his 6th of the campaigne
James Leslie with his 1st Boro goal of his career, he went on to score another 2 more in total

John Robsons team are matching leaders WBA at the top of the table, with the only difference between both teams is the 4 points they took off the mighty Boro over both games

1st March

Following the mighty Boro's brilliant away 7-2 thrashing of Barnsley, Leicester Fosse were our visitors to Linthorpe road for this exciting second division fixture, we arein the final 11 games of this incredible season with the Boro looking odds on to win promotion & in the football league for only 3 seasons

Leicester followed all other challengers before them, as the Boro again smashed a hatful of goals past our opponents, not as many as 7 the previous week, this time it was just the 5 with no reply from Leicester

David Smith started the rout with the Boro's 4th home penalty since joining the football league, his 6th of the season, 3 penalties
A brace from Joe Cassidy, for his 12th of the campaigne
James leslie with his 2nd & penulimate Boro goal
James Crawford finished the scoring with his only career goal

Since our last defeat on the 21st december we have won 7 & drew one of the following 8 games, scoring 31, with conceding 3 goals

John Robsons team are a team full of goals & a back 5 big Jack would have been proud of

Today we carry on our great goalscoring unveaten run, as we win our 4th game on the bounce & out of the last 9 games winning 8 & drawing one, this was truly our 1st excellent team with our 1st top notch defensive back 5

We've conceded 3 goals since 28th December, one in a 2-1 win over Blackpool & 2 against Barnsley in a 7-2 Boro win

Preston were the next team to suffer at the hands of the Boro machine & even with home advantage they failed to halt the Boro juggernaut as we ran out comfortable 3-0 winners & edge that bit closer to the top tier

With the following goal scored by
Abraham Jones with his 1st Boro career goal
John ' Jack' Brearley put the mighty Boro two goals up, carrying on from his 4 he bagged in his last away game, his 18th of an incredible goalscoring season
John Leslie wrapped up the scoring with his 3rd of the season

9 games remaning

The Boro juggernaught rummbles on, Burnley are the next team to face the might of our forwards & the miserey of our defence as we triumphed with another 3-0 home win with Joe Cassidy scoring his 12th of the season & brace from John ' Jack' Brearley to recording his 19th of the campaigne

The Boro are going head to head with WBA fighting for the No1 spot to promotion

William Wardrobe, registered No39, scoring his 15th Boro career goal
I feel it would be remiss for no-one to respond to the above bit, even though it is from an old post. You don't see anyone with that name these days. What happened to all the Wardrobes?

March 22nd - Port Vale away

Boro had recorded a consecutive wins on the wins on the bounce to 5 & were hoping to increase that run when we travelled to PV for our promotion title chasing with WBA

Unfortunately Boro could only manage a 1-1 draw at Port Vale with Andrew Ramsey scoring his one & only Boro goal in his career

The previous 11 games had resulted in 4 wins, one draw, 5 wins, one draw, we had some team back then

Boro completed the season & runners up to WBA with a 2-0 away win away to Blackpool courtecy of a brace from Alex Robertson, taking his tally for the season to 8 in 6 games, the final 6 games of the season

Boro finished 2nd to WBA, 9 points ahead of 3rd placed Preston North End & 4 points behind the champions, due to WBA doing the double over the Boro

We scored 90 goals to WBA's 82 & conceded 24 compared to WBA's 29

Losing only the one game ahead to home, 2nd best regarding goals conceded, 7, Burnely held the record when they conceded 6
We scored 90 goals, the most for a promoted team

Scoring 5 - 4 times
Scoring 6 - twice
Scoring 7 - twice

Promoted to the top flight for the 1st time after been in the football league 3 seasons
