Marvin Johnson and George Friend

Just read the highlights on the Teesside Live.

Love Warnock. Tells it how it is.

marvin johnson isn't good enough to be a winger, he's a makeshift left back who is inept at defending, his best role is probbaly as a wingback in a back 5 as he does a half decent job as a wingback

I seriously hope Warnock isn't wanting to re-sign him as our first choice left back or first choice winger in a back 4 set up

There must be something about Marvin J if Warnock likes him and plays him every game. I remember that he got Boro a penalty quite a few games back. What else has he got ?

Friend is a heart decision. johnson i guess fills gaps. Rather they both had gone tbh.

I agree, hopefully George's will be on much reduced terms to recognise his supporting role in the squad from now on. Johnson I just don't see, he's average, but he worked hard under Warnock and filled in and gave his all, which Warnock demands of his players so if it is a cheap deal and as cover not first choice then so be it.

The squad needs bodies still, but I really hope these are bodies to offer cover and options rather than for our first XI next season.

with the money we have available its the easier option to re-sign 2 squad players on reduced contracts than it is to go out and replace. I doubt either will be first choice but both can do a job on occasion, as shown by the last 8 games

Heard a week ago that George had been offered a new deal at massively reduced terms(not sure I believe figures so won't post them here) and he was considering signing. However two other clubs are offering him much better terms so he is considering what to do.

Johnson will be on pretty low wages seen as we got him from League 1. 100% agree with @Becksy above that I would be very disappointed if he's going to be first choice in any position but more than happy if he is just going to be a decent squad player on low wages.

He signed his last deal in the PL? He's been a mainstay for years so I suspect he'll be up around £20k plus like Ayala. But his value to the squad now must be well below those levels and we could replace him with a competent yet unspectacular champo left back for way less. The replacement will be nowhere near as gorgeous though.

I hope he sticks around as Club Captain and starts coaching under Warnock.

Not doubting Warnock already,are we?

Honestly happy either way. Other clubs probably see him as the player of 4 years ago still in his early 30s. I think we probably see him as a good character and decent centre back cover now. Injuries have sadly taken a toll.

Because we know him inside out we'll probably have more accurately offered what he's now worth. If he can get more elsewhere and chooses to go wouldn't begrudge him it. Unlike Ayala he signed the extension and played on helping to keep us up. Not a bad way to sign off if that's what he chooses. It'll not be forgotten.

I think George and Johnson showed enough during the 8 games relegation battle to show they can still do a job for Warnock.

Is it better the devil you know or do you gamble on a couple of new signings and hope it works out?

Well, they can't stay forever! For me we desperately need some new blood, new voices and players with a meaner more physical streak who are up for the fight of a championship season.
