Manchester United players showing the way?

very easy to basically pass the burden onto your club though. Try saying we will not take 25% and 25% additional should be donated to the NHS then you are really splitting the burden with your employer.

Anything that saves lives is a good thing and that it’s good that a club as high profile as Manchester United are leading the way, however I think it’s wrong that footballers are being singled out when other wealthy individuals, well paid occupations and organisations are not, prize money from cancelled events could be put into a pot and handed out as an example.

Hopefully this will trigger lots of other charitable donations. I hope so.

This. What about tennis players, golfers, pop stars, actors, highly paid hedgefund managers (some of which do earn footballer salaries). Whilst some of them may be making donations off their own bat and not making a song and dance of it, its only ever footballers who are talked about in the press as though they 'owe' it more than other high earners.

Yep, why aren't the hedge fund managers, actors and traders also facing similar criticisms ?

Edit:- Pretty much what he said above. I wonder if it's footballers because the vast majority are from working class backgrounds, and therefore people feel as though they "deserve" it less than say Tarquin the Hedge Fund Manager or Hugo the actor ?

Good to see some movement on this. There is also a premier League fund for lower League clubs being started.
They're getting it in the neck because they are the most visible.
I thought we all hated bankers and hedge fund managers anyway, since 2008?
