Man About The House (and other 70s sitcoms)

Alf Garnett used to go on bigoted rants which unfortunately mirrored the views of a lot of his fans - who subsequently completely missed the point.
Also, I can't remember there ever being a black character to add balance and comeback to Garnett's rants.
You missed marygold then ( he went on to be a huge star in the US in Oz).

The caveat to it all is Alf himself as warren mitchell was Jewish.

I didn't partucualrly like the Alf Garnett character at the time and even as a young child he appeared a parody of a East End working class bloke.

His son in law often argued with him and even his daughter and wife. I felt the relatives added some balance when he went on racist rants.

Yes, the one where they all get bladdered on the home made wine was very racy

for the good life

We used to have a special drawer in the office I worked in in the eighties where the company porn was stashed. One of the magazines contained a, erm, how shall I put it, ‘full spread’ from Olive from On the Busses, about fifteen pages worth. God that was a challenging wänk.
i just cant believe that any jazz mag would ever put olive in their mag, flap shots and all. no way. you must be lying.

Exactly! He was a parody mocking the racists. Why didn't so many people see that??
Because a lot of people agreed with him. And his rants never really backfired on him to show him up.
His placid wife would tut and shake her head, his daughter would gently tell him to be quiet and it was left to the rebellious (and divisive) son in law to confront him.

Still laugh at Hylda Baker with Nellie's
Malapropisms

"You haven't had the pleasure of me yet have you?."
"I'll inhale that remark"
"You'll become a couple of alcohofrolics"
"This is a fine hysterical building, kept up by the National Truss"
"I can say that without fear of contraception."
"I've had lessons in electricution, you know"
"What are you incinerating?"
"Look at it in here, it's like Sodom and Tomorrow"
