Man About The House (and other 70s sitcoms)

Apart from the easy on the eye Tomsett and Wilcox the comedy itself was absolutely dire. Reflection of the bad old days of ITV situation comedy.

Very uncomfortable watching now but Love Thy Neighbour actually did a lot to highlight the absurdity of racist attitudes. As did Rising Damp. The white racist is always the brunt of the jokes and his views are never perceived as a positive.

I was only a kid at the time but my takeaway from Love Thy Neighbour was always that the wives were far more sensible that the husbands and the white husband was the most stupid of the lot. It did indeed highlight the stupidity of racism.

Rising Damp was in a different class and did an even better job of showing that these prejudices were based on ignorance.

In Rising Damp, as the series progressed, despite the racist and prejudiced comments, Rigsby really admired Philip...he was everything Rigsby wanted to be. The comments waned as the series went on.

Always find it funny on some Facebook groups, especially football nostalgia the comments when alf garnett crops up.
The amount of people who just didn't get who mitchell was sending up

Alf Garnett used to go on bigoted rants which unfortunately mirrored the views of a lot of his fans - who subsequently completely missed the point.
Also, I can't remember there ever being a black character to add balance and comeback to Garnett's rants.
The only challenges came from his daughter and her boyfriend, who was portrayed as a lazy, good for nothing "scouse git".
