Malta

A lot of it appears to not been rebuilt after WW2 but really relaxing pace. Not for those who want to dance the night away. Been twice and loved it bir=th times.

I’ve stayed at the Hilton St Julians a couple of times, short dtroll to paceville where the lively bit is, shorter stroll Spaniola bay and St Julians bay where there are bars and restaurants. I was basically on the drink but it is a nice place. Plenty of refurb and infrastructure work ongoing.

Popeye village is good
Agreed about Mdina
Marsaxlokk (fishing village) is good there check it out
Go to the beaches (see 3 below)
Golden Bay
Mellieha
Obviously Comino.

Do check out on the website what festivals they’re doing each day/night and you won’t regret it. It’s beautiful country.
👍
Did they rebuild Popeyes village ? I know the original burned down.

My parents took me over 50 years ago - it was almost still British then - everyone spoke English and they even used our currency. People there also loved the British. My Dad was stationed there in 1956 for Suez

History was fascinating there - Knights of St John defended the Island against massive Turkish attacks - out numbered over 100 to 1 and they won. The St Johns Ambulance people in the UK were formed from the Knights of St John on Malta hence the Maltese Cross in their logo. The Knights were formed to look after pilgrims to the Holy Land and made up of men from all over Europe.

The people there are mad keen on football too, like the North East.
Amazing history for a small island

Many memories of the Black Bull in St Julian's.
Absolutely shiters meliters on free shots of Sambuca. First place I remember being able to have a beer in McDonald's.

Went once in 94 with the navy… shoved over the worst part of grand harbour as we were in with the ark royal… the locals didn’t really appreciate us being there spending our money but I guess it was more to do with the latent colonial attitude of many of the sailors…
it did seem a bit dark and dirty but I’ve heard it’s been cleaned up since…

Went to Malta with my wife before we were married 38 years ago and before Covid hit. Still has a lot of charm, character and of course the history. Went to St Julians and found the same harbour restaurant we dined in all those years ago but behind the typical Maltese house around the shore line were modern developments, but nicely done. Inland some very nice villages which are unspoilt. Gozo is a nice day out. Brits are always made welcome for obvious reasons. Never been to Greece, so can't compare.

I had a great time in Malta at the start of my last trip away with work. 16 days in quarantine then a month in drydock confined to the vessel. Never saw a bloody thing of the place 😁

Last went Sept 10th 2001. Flew out to meet HMS Illustrious for a big military exercise. We were in the bar where Oliver Reid died when filming Gladiator, when the twin Towers got hit. The ship sent word out around town to get all ships company back to ship immediately. As we were RAF Harrier engineers, we ignored the call and carried on drinking, as the fish heads (Navy) all scurried back to ship. We hadn’t seen what was going on in the world. Eventually we were asked if we were off the ship to which we replied “yes”.
“Why didn’t you follow orders and return to ship when asked?” came the statement from the irate Fish head.
“Because we’re RAF and you only asked for ships company” we pedantically replied.
The man in Navy uniform got very angry and eventually we relented and returned to ship, swinging our soaps on ropes.
We then saw what 0786315E-C3B0-45D0-9E66-E5EA8748BB99.jpegwas unfolding across the world. probably the scariest time of my career. But also very memorable. Oh, Malta was very nice.
