Makems obsession

Just finished working with a long time season ticket holder at their place and he was going on about the glory supporters coming back.

I will admit my opinion of their support has slightly changed in recent years.

I can't deny that managing to average crowds of 31k last season in league one was impressive, especially when you consider it was their fourth consecutive season in the division, and they didn't even have that great of a campaign - only managing promotion via the play-offs.

There's no doubt about it pricing is a big factor though, and both themselves and Newcastle have huge catchment areas.

Let them have it this weekend, it was a big game for them on a stage they haven't been competitive in for a number of years. It's like when a guy loses loads of weight and can't stop posting pics with his abs out on social media. They've worked hard, they look better than they have for a while and they can have a moment of self satisfaction. It doesn't put any more points on the board though.

A lad at work is a Sunderland fan. He doesn’t go every week as he’s Billog born and bred but goes a few times a season. He went at the weekend.

Our conversation on Monday morning went thusly:-

Me : How was the match?
Mackem : Yeah 40 thousand!
Me : Yeah?!
Mackem : Yeah there was 40 thousand there.
Me : But how was the match?
Mackem : Nowt flash.

He must have misheard my question first time round.

I don’t think my original post was clear.
My point was about the local press fuelling their obsession with attendances, whilst also making direct comparisons with us in their headlines, 2 days in a row.

I don’t think anybody disagrees that their attendances are impressive. But Jesus, it’s just a crowd size.

That first article - why did they start with Stockport v Barrow? What was the relevance of that match for comparison purposes?

The local media know their audience. That’s what it boils down to. Their fans put attendances above everything but their results against Newcastle.

I believe in the 4 top home attendances outside the premiership. Only derby won . Just goes to show they dont guarantee the 3points and id rather have the points anytime over bragging rights over attendances

But there’s no bragging rights.

It’s clear Steve Gibson doesn’t care about attendance figures, if he did he’d reduce fees to have the place packed every week subsidising and handing out fee tickets galore.

but he’d rather have 70-80% attendance paying top dollar than 100% paying half that amount.

Full attendance isn’t on the agenda and never has been.

Sunderland 41k, recently promoted to the Championship.

Bournemouth 11k recently promoted to the Premier League.

Last time I looked bonus points weren't given for attendances - who actually gives one f*ck apart from the mackems 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

For enticing younger fans, freebies and offers will probably be more important than ever for Sunderland.

They've had over a decade of rubbish dished up to them and that means a lot of younger kids, whose parents gave it up, could be tempted by the possibility of big names and trophies a few miles north after their new owners came in.

Big crowds do mean better atmospheres, but I don't think you can judge anyone for staying away with the demands on family finances at the moment.

To be fair to him thats quite an impressive statement considering any 'glory supporters' of Sunderland would have to be well over 90 years of age!
