Make up of Defence last night

Was shocked to see Dijksteel in the centre and Fry on the left for majority of that first half. I think he was hoping Fry was gonna play well there and bring Lenihan in for Dijksteel on Sunday and have a back 3 of McNair, Lenihan and Fry. But Fry wasn’t enjoying it on the left and only really performed well when he went back into the centre.

Some tough decisions for Wilder to make on Sunday as no one at the back has been In particularly good form

One important factor to be taken from last night, was the time for our young lads to experience the "grown-ups" game at the Riverside. It was a sucker-punch to concede right at the very end of added time, but the youngsters will have benefited from the experience. (y)

Surely with what we have available, below is the best set up, on paper at least -

Fry RCB
Lenihan CB
McNair LCB

Edit - seconds after posting that, I thought maybe Fry and Lenihan should swap. So obviously not as straight forward as I thought 😂

This arsing about with the CBs is crazy in my opinion.

Dijksteel RCB
Fry CB
Mcnair LCB

For me, Lenihan's role is as cover or to allow mcnair to push into midfield when required if we don't replace tav.

Our problems last season were GK, LWB, CM to an extent and then massively Upfront.

Wilder seems to be way too hung up on a non problem in my view.

I agree. I really didn’t think last season was a big problem in the CB positions, but maybe it’s more that in order to play ‘Wilderball‘ properly he wants that LCB who can step out. I don’t think Lenihan would have entertained the move, if he wasn’t coming to start, so he’s got to be expected to feature. But I agree that I was relatively happy with last season‘s set up, and it could only have been strengthened by the addition of a quality keeper and LWB.
