Maddo and the other one - some needle ?

Maddo is fine, he has grown on me over the years. As for Drury, I really think he is the worst commentator i have ever heard, bar Jacqui Oatley.

There is often a delay of a few seconds before you realise there is a goal or a corner, penalty or whatever has just happened and you are left in limbo briefly. He seems too wrapped up in himself and his own deadpan emotions to convey the moment to the listener.

The lad that did the commentary a few weeks ago, Rob was it, was good, much better than woeful Drury. Its about him 1st the listener is an after thought. Commentators are supposed to help people visualise the moment. He fails and then angers/winds our household up with his arrogance, pathetic attempts at humour, poor banter and finally slow conveyance of goalmouth incident.

I said that to my mate when watching earlier - both of them put me off the game. Honestly I'm not really feeling this season as I think I need the in person experience with football but with poor commentary it kills it even more for me. Maddo seems very aligned to the club which grates on me felt this particularly under Pulis/Woody, and Drury is ok but constantly at you. Sick of hearing MD describe attire of team's and manager's attire its painful.

Maddo ain't the brightest, ex-pros generally are not. When you have an educated and articulate footballer everyone mentions it because it's highly unusual

I have heard Maddo on several occasions make up word endings that do not exist in the English language. Sometimes he makes whole words up. So you need someone alongside them who is brighter and more articulate, whch Drury is but he is not likeable. Brownlee was very good at dumbing himself down to the level of footballers and our average supporter, he had the common touch and that is key

You need a bright co-commentator who is humorous in a humble way, but has the intelligence to cut off ex-pros and listeners before they go too far off-piste

Ali Brownlee used to get hammered on the earlier version of this site for many years, people used to slag him off no end. I think Drury isn't bad, we could have a lot worse although I do think he's tried to copy Ali's style and maybe he needs to find his own because it's not endearing him to the listeners. And add to that the resting state of the native Boro fan is to think everyone's s**t.

My occasional problem with the commentary is that an incident will occur and there is what seems like a good few seconds when I have absolutely no idea what just happened. I'm 100% reliant on the radio commentary to 'paint a picture' for me, but it often fails to do that. I know this has been mentioned on here before so I'm not alone in thinking this.

I think it's worth saying that for any failings some might think about Maddo has at least I know when we have scored from the 'Get in!' and the accompanying knocking over of a microphone (or cup of tea). Good man!

Good point.

Radio is about painting a picture using your voice as a presenter.
The radio broadcasters craft is about bringing whats in front of you to life in the mind of the listener.
The individual is the "artist" who paints the picture.
The picture is only as vivid and alive as the skills of the commentator.
Theres a big difference between the presenter who knows what a radio mike looks like and the one who knows how to use it.

I watched Boro v Coventry the other week and i got the BBC Coventry radio commentary Steve Ogrizovic was co commentator. Now that was awful they where just making random stuff up like talking about our 3 Brazillians Juninho. Emerson and Ravanelli. :(

Just seen this. You have hit the nail on the head.

Its funny, I don’t think he has tried to copy Ali’s style one bit. I think he has tried to be more of a neutral commentator. That may or may not be whether he had ambitions beyond BBC Tees. His failure to convey the visual message as it unfolds, his ability to always leave the listener ‘hanging’ at vital moments wondering what if anything has just happened. He has the ability to almost sound like he wants the opposition to score at times, I do wonder if thats becuae it generates emotions from Maddo and calls for the after match phone in as a Boro victory often means lower calls.

All in all, he is nothing like Big Al, He sucks the emotion out of important moments for me, which is the very lifeblood of a good commentator, so much so, that I would not put money on him being able to see his own reflection in the mirror.

I don’t think he does copy allies style I think he copies a radio 5 almost neutral style ( more akin to an Alan green) as though he’s on national radio. Hence his shouting as much as much for the away team scoring as us and facts about the chip butty song at Sheffield etc.

The one thing with allie is thar You knew that allie would have been at the game anyway even if he wasn’t commentating as a paying fan he lived sleep and breathed the Boro to him we were the pinnacle this was his club his town his people.

You don’t get that with drury it’s like he’s passing through look at how many games he’s missed this season alone.

This was done about 2 weeks ago. And probably 2 weeks before that. Why dont you just bring those threads up so we dont have to hear the same repetitive views by the same people on this topic.

You can tell Boro are doing well when the commentators are constantly getting criticised. Some people need to moan for moanings sake. Change the record.

I enjoy listening to Maddo. He knows the game and is passionate about the Boro. I honestly think some of the comments about him being thick are simply because he has such a broad accent. Listen to what he says, not how he says it. Won't comment on the other bloke.

Well the OP was not about Dury's commentating style versus anyone elses. It was about why he was goading and frankly insulting his so-commentator. Maddo didn't rise to it. Could easily have said something along the lines of - I played the game for 20 odd years wtf do you know. But kept calm. I think he called him Dr Maddo or some other quip and Maddo just said no taking on oxygen really works.

You’re not forced to hear these same repetitive views though are you, you opened the thread knowing what it was about and decided to add to the conversation.
As for it having something to do with Boro doing well that’s just stupid, people have always disliked Drury’s commentaries.

Fair comment about opening the thread up and commenting.

And yes, clearly some people dont like his style, but it rarely gets brought up when were doing badly and there are other things to moan about.

I remember Ali used to take plenty of criticism on here.
