M + S in the Boro shutting

There is a car park on the roof of the Hill Street. How close do you want to park?

Can you take a trolley full of shopping from that Marks and Spencers to your car on the roof?

Something you can do at most other supermarkets, including most of the other Marks and Spencers around Teesside.

Sign of the times Im afraid. As you can see, even this website advertises clothing and other such items to be easily purchased.
Fortunately the town where I live wised up to this years ago and it is now a thriving centre of leisure, restaurants and bars where people enjoy meeting up. Nice market too.

1 hour 12 minutes to Newcastle for me by bus. 47 minutes to Teesside Park by bus.

Something not quite right for a distance of about 3 miles.
It's free bus passes for time-rich pensioners that causes this, bus operators are quite happy to inch round the estates to pick up these fares. In Europe busses take more direct routes with fewer stops. It makes it more convenient. Bring busses back into public ownership, scrap free bus passes and increase the state pension instead.

Best thing that can happen to the town would be to consolidate all the remaining shops into one smaller area. Turn the rest into decent quality public housing, available to all

Yes

Sad to hear. I used to quite enjoy the cafe in there. What actually is there in boro town now?

I never shop up there anymore. Everything I buy is online. Although granted I've never ever been one for going shopping.

Only reason I ever go is to occasionally have a pint in the pig iron after the match or just generally go on a night out.

Do you think if the town centre could attract big name players like John Lewis, Waitrose and Ikea etc... then that would bring back the crowds? Hence most people shop online to buy from those sort of brands.

Easier said than done mind getting them to come here.

Youre putting the cart before the horse.
The crowds have gone and pursue alternative pastimes. The reason why M & S are closing. That and the imposed cost of being there.

Much slower than the train now since it added extra stops. Friends travelling for work now try to catch the National Express
I get it regularly and find it comparable

Looking at that, going to Newcastle from Stockton High Street at say...10:22, gets to newcastle eldon square at 11:52, so 1 hour 30 minutes.

An adult single on the train at roughly same time:

It's hardly a huge gulf. There are faster trains that take an hour but a single is £12, a return makes it £15.90. We can both travel on X10 for £14.25. For 10-20 minutes journey difference at half the price I'll allow it.

Agreed, the town centre cannot accommodate a large pedestrianised street plus two decent sized shopping centres.

It’s a shame that the two main proposed eating and drinking areas (Baker Street area and train station area) are separated by about 500 yards of pedestrianisation that is totally deserted after 5pm.

I wonder if all of Linthorpe road could become “depedestrianised” again?? Create more street parking and encourage some of the small businesses that stay open later further up Linthorpe road, to move further down? It would help consolidate the area. Could put all the major retail in the two shopping centres.

On the day after M and S announced 20 new stores opening around the country which are their food market place brands. None of them near the town.

Surely linthorpe road is a far more engaging earting / drinking area than Bedford street / Baker Street? Most places on Baker Street are small and and often quiet and limited opening hours. Linthorpe road is huge so that would be a nightmare pedestrian area

Yes I was saying the council should remove the pedestrianisation, then encourage the businesses further up Linthorpe road to move further down.

The town centre needs to be much more compact.
