Luke Ayling

Shall we look at some facts?

Engel created 2 chances and had 2 shots
Ayling had 1 sort and created no chances.

Neither player played an accurate Cross.

Xassists ayling0.01 engel 0.21

Ayling played many more accurate long balls than Engel 5 from 7 v1 from 3

Ayling also managed more clearances than Engel 8 versus 2

Engel wins on intercepting and recoveries
9 versus 4.

Engel played better than Ayling today, not by a lot but he did.

Ayling was fine at the back and created more going forward, and he did this with less help than Ayling had from Jones.
I don’t need your stats. I was in the stadium. Ayling was the best and most influential player on the team with his leadership and quality and blocks. It was clear for all to see. Honestly I like you as a poster but stats really do not tell everything.

Wait and see who gets voted the fans man of the match tomorrow. I can bet you it won’t be Engel.

It will be Ayling or Morris.

Of course they don't, but anything else is just opinion and over a season stats tell the story. In a single game, the can mislead, you are right.

Even watching the game I thought engel offered more going forward and was solid at the back. He lost his man once as did Ayling.

Also I think Ayling would look much worse without his sidekick Jones.

They were both good today. Lath was the best player on the pitch followed by Jones. I don't have a problem with someone who has a different opinion, it was your laugh emoji I disagree with.

I thought you would take it well with that username.

The reason I laughed was cos I genuinely don’t think there is many if any other Boro fan who would say Engel was better than Ayling today. It is all about opinions but realistically on this one I am very comfortable with mine so just agree to disagree.

I will be giving the thread a bump in the morning when Ayling gets the man of the match votes from all fans 👍.

Have a good night UTB

Jonny is still the best midfielder at the club

Sadly not.

Howson has been a fantastic servant for this football club, but he’s needed to be replaced for a while. It’s one of the things that have held us back, his legs have sadly seen better days.

The club have thankfully recognised this and brought Morris in.

He still has a huge part to play at the club this season, but mostly from the bench.

Generally speaking rather than relating specifically to yesterday.

The problem I have with these really niche stats is that they don’t take into account the pattern of the game.

I.e. if the opposition mainly attack down their left, then obviously our right back is going to be involved more. Resulting in more clearances, interceptions etc.

You have to look at someone's impact on the game, not just in terms of touches, tackle, passes etc, but in terms of presence and influence. In that department he was massive.

His defensive partnership with Jones is superb. They work so well together.

The times Ayling was beaten Jones was almost always there. Often they cornered the player 2 on 1

I think that’s a credit to his experience and communication, he seems to guide Jones, telling him where he wants him to be when defending and it’s working very well.

I enjoyed a moment second half when they passed to Ronald and the ball went out behind Ronald, who clearly wasn’t happy and Ayling was just laughing at him while walking at snails pace toward the ball. Ronald didn’t seem overly impressed to have the Mickey taken.

Was that when he palmed him off with a hand on his chest.

I was one of the many on here that when we signed him, didn’t think it was a good idea. I thought if he wasn’t good enough for Leeds, he wouldn’t be good enough for us.

My goodness, how wrong I was.

This lad is exactly what I love to see in a player.

His work rate, dedication, effort, leadership are all priceless.

You can just tell he’s the exact type of player the dressing room needs and loves, especially with the amount of younger players we have that are coming through.

Unbelievable free signing.

Also. The way in which he picked up the ball for the penalty and shoved it in ELL’s chest to basically say, you’re our main man. Now go score (after he missed his last pen in last friendly).

And then when Morris made that error that nearly led to a Swansea goal, Ayling was the first to go to Morris to tell him not to worry and crack on.

Quality captain and leader.

Not only that, they are wrong.

Ayling played the ball into Azaz in space on the edge of the area and Azaz held onto slightly too long and didn't get his shot away and tangled his feet up inside the box. I would say that created a chance.

Some players are like that, Jonny included he seems like a nice bloke but a nightmare to play against, Ayling for me out of all the signings so far is the one that I wanted in, sure Carrick Woody and the recruitment team wanted him to pen a deal straight after last season. He is enjoying it here after a good spell at Leeds who in all honesty their fans didn't want to let him go.
