Looking at the race for 2nd place objectively

Can't help but feel really deflated today after both ours and their results. Felt like it could be a huge week with the possibility of us overtaking them (albeit if every result went our way), but I do think a 6 point gap at this stage feels very big.

The fact Heckingbottom might be waking up to the likes of Norwood/Fleck who have been stinking the place out for Sheff U is annoying too. I thought they looked a lot better than anytime I've seen them recently with both McAtee/Doyle on the pitch.

I'm sure there'll be a good few twists and turns, and obviously the fact that I'm sat disappointed that we're not closer to 2nd spot is such a testament to how well we've done since Carrick has come in.

Also, if Sheff Utd beat Blackburn this weekend in the FA Cup (which they're favourites to do so), this will mean their fixture away to Huddersfield on 22 April will also be rearranged due to the FA Cup semi-finals, creating yet another back log of games for them.

We just need to hope Warnock still has Huddersfield within a fighting chance of survival when their rearranged game is played.

I think I read that any rearrangement would be the midweek before the final weekend, which could make it a right scrap for both Hudds and Sheff U.

Got everything crossed they go through on Saturday though. An FA Cup semi final surely has to take even a slight focus away from the league games around it.

Sheffield United are not very good. Everytime I have seen them play they have failed to dominate. They will loose more games than we do in the run in. Will we run out of games before catching them? It's possible, I suppose.

In the previous nine games we have amassed 9 more points than them. The same return in the next 9 games puts us comfortably in second place. So objectively, yup we can catch them.

My slight worry with them now is that team Heckingbottom picked last night. Having a look on Twitter/their forums, it's the team that their fans have been wanting to see. Fleck/Norwood have looked terrible and have been having a big impact on their sluggish performances. I actually thought they looked pretty good last night (obviously, the Mackems are shyte) with the two Man City lads in there.

These are Sheff Utd's remaining fixtures

a - Norwich
h - Wigan
a - Burnley
h - Cardiff
h - Bristol City
a - Huddersfield
h - WBA
h - Preston
a - Birmingham

I would expect them to win at least 4 of them home games and then Huddersfield and Birmingham away from home, I would expect them to get two wins there, anything can happen in football but like I said last night, we have done amazing and play the best football in the championship on our day. It is the previous management team that has cost us this season in regards to the automatic race. The play offs will be tense but over two games we will fancy our chances and then get to Wembley on that big open pitch, Archer and Ramsey could have a field day with there pace but we will just have to wait and see, UTB!!
I've not seen anything in Sheff U's recent form to suggest they will get 4 home wins out of those games.

Remember they only beat Sunderland due to a terrible decision by the ref and assistant ref. And Sunderland are one of the worst sides on the league at home.

It's definitely still on.

Huddersfield could be about to go in to administration, they might be virtually down by the time we play them, let alone Sheffield United.

They'll still have pride to play for, and that does throw up funny results.
Look at us getting battered by Preston on the final day last season.

Am I right in thinking that Burnley's game against Sheffield Utd could see them promoted with a win? Put that in the mix, too.
All our games are crucial but the one against Luton looks extra crucial.
But none of this matters if we don't beat PNE.
... think I need to think about something else...

Didn't watch the game last night so I can only comment on stats. They suggest it was pretty close with very few shots on target, 3 and 4 respectively.

They will have to improve to stay in second place, that's for sure.

Hi Guys I rarely post on here but would like to add my two penneth. If we had have won on Tuesday the minimum amount of games to catch and pass SU would have been 2. With us drawing on Tuesday the minimum amount of games to pass them is ( well would you credit it ) 2. So as far as I can see the only difference is we have 1 less game to do it in. Keep the faith and UTFB.

Sheff Utd have been the chaser before, didnt they pip leeds for automatic promotion a few years ago with a win at Elland Road towards the end of the season?

If Burnley beat Sunderland, and Luton drop a point in their next three matches, Burnley would clinch promotion with a win against Middlesbrough on Good Friday.

this predicts they will finish on 85pts. if that was the case we would need another 22pts -- win 7 and draw 1 out of the last 9
It looks to me like it predicts 91 points for them. I would be massively surprised if they finish with fewer than 88, so we'd need 24+ from 9 games. It's just not going to happen.
